The trend of energy transform affects the European energy sector. Due to the relatively fast developing nature of the industry, Business Model Innovation in the energy sector is a novel domain that has not been examined much in the literature. This thesis examines how suppliers in the EU energy sector react and adapt to the change by innovating their business models. By qualitative case studies with explorative and comparable design, the author analyzed the state of four companies and demonstrated the different Business Model Innovation approaches that are applied by firms in the sector. The findings show that technology is both the core competence for the firm as well as the dominant element for Business Model Innovation. The success of technology commercialization is b¬ased on a reasonable value proposition and Business Model Innovation, but if the technology is unique as an outstanding offering of the business model, it may lighten the importance of Business Model Innovation and will dominate the Business Model Innovation. Except for the technology factor, the Business Model Innovation varies based on the firm’s culture and knowledge. A varied degree of flexibility in the area of implementing Business Model Innovation between product-based firm and service-centred firm is due to firm’s value creation variety and basically due to the firm’s culture and knowledge variation.The results show that the Business Model Innovation in the service-centered firm is more likely to affect the end user. It would be refreshing to manage more interviews with several suppliers who vary in size, resources and brand reputation to discover how these factors will influence the Business Model Innovation.
La tendenza della trasformazione dell'energia influisce sul settore energetico europeo. A causa della natura relativamente rapida dello sviluppo del settore, l'innovazione del business model nel settore energetico è un nuovo campo che non è stato esaminato molto in letteratura. Questa tesi esamina come i fornitori nel settore energetico dell'UE reagiscono e si adattano al cambiamento innovando i loro modelli di business. Per mezzo di studi di casi qualitative, con design esplorativo e comparabile, l'autore ha analizzato lo stato di quattro società e ha dimostrato i diversi approcci di innovazione del business model applicati dalle aziende del settore. I risultati mostrano che la tecnologia è sia la competenza principale per l'azienda sia l'elemento dominante per l'innovazione del business model. Il successo della commercializzazione della tecnologia si basa su una proposta di valore ragionevole e l'innovazione del business model, ma se la tecnologia è unica come offerta eccezionale del business model, potrebbe enfatizzare l'importanza e dominare l'innovazione del business model. Ad eccezione del fattore tecnologico, l'innovazione del business model varia in base alla cultura e alle conoscenze dell'azienda. Un ampio grado di flessibilità nel settore dell'implementazione del l'innovazione del business model tra le imprese basate sul prodotto e le imprese centrate sul servizio è dovuta alla varietà di creazione di valore dell'impresa e fondamentalmente dovuta alla cultura e alla varietà della conoscenza aziendale. I risultati mostrano che l'innovazione del business model nelle aziende basate sui servizi ha maggiori probabilità di influenzare il cliente finale. Sarebbe interessante fare più interviste a diversi fornitori che variano in termini di dimensioni, risorse e reputazione del marchio per scoprire come questi fattori influenzeranno il l'innovazione del business model.
