The present work is focused on the implementation of sustainable business models by recently born firms, which aim at giving their own contribution in the pursuit of a sustainable development. The study is conducted with the objective to fill gaps identified in literature in respect to the inclusion of sustainability into business operations and, more in detail, to the adoption of practices referred to the creation of value from discarded materials. These practices indeed are considered a powerful way to reduce the current level of resource consumption, which is not sustainable in the long term. Adopting a case study methodology, data have been collected interviewing nine start-ups belonging to three different industrial sectors: fashion, construction and furniture. This methodology allowed to deeply investigate how firms put in practice the business model “create value from waste” and which are the implications that stem from its adoption. The study also pointed out that, in respect to sustainability, companies rely on additional practices alongside their principal business model. Some of them are more focused on delivering social benefits (such as consumer education and social inclusion), while others on environmental ones (e.g. reduction of pollution and CO2 emissions), however, it is their combination which allows to achieve sustainable synergies. The present research aims at clarifying which are the most powerful combinations. Furthermore, the study pointed out that the sources of wastes collected by start-ups to be transformed into something new can be significantly different. In fact, it is possible to classify discarded materials considering if they belong to the same or to a different industrial sector from the one of the start-up, and if they have been generated by final customers or by companies. We did not limit our investigation within the boundary of a single company, but we extended it to the network of stakeholders that are impacted or impact the business model of the sustainable start-up. The analysis considers suppliers’ wastes as an “uncaptured” value, which is instead recognised and exploited by sustainable new born ventures that, reusing that wastes, are able to generate and deliver value to a broad network of stakeholders. The creation of this virtuous circle is analysed and facilitated by the tools and models developed in this research study (for instance, it is suggested a logical pattern that an entrepreneur willing to create value from waste can follow). However, both academia and practitioners should continue studying the complex and dynamic topic of sustainability, building theories and frameworks tailored for different typologies of firms and business areas.
