SCRM in the textile sector : the role of a dominant player

This research investigates how the dominant players of different Italian textile supply chains behave towards the other firms of the same supply chain. More specifically, the work aims to discuss how the aforementioned industries manage the risks involved in their position. The research follows the literary review methodology. It started from a previous work made by the Politecnico di Milano student Enrico Mattiazzi that gave the groundwork for the development of this work, followed by a review of several studies regarding the Supply Chain Risk Management (SCRM). As it was easily expected, the dominant player has in its hands the election of supplier and could substitute one firm with another one, affecting considerably the firm that is substituted. Regarding the risks that the aforementioned firms have to deal with, there is evidence in the study that the risk of substitutability, financial handling/practice and operational disruption are the most common. In order to mitigate them, it was evidenced that the mitigations strategies where a dominant player is involved are usually supply chain to supply chain passive strategies.

Questa ricerca indaga su come gli attori dominanti della filiera italiana si comportano nei confronti delle altre aziende della stessa supply chain. Nello specifico, il lavoro si propone di discutere come le industrie citate gestiscono i rischi comportanti dalla loro posizione. La ricerca segue la metodologia di literary review. Lo studio è nato da un precedente lavoro svolto dallo studente del Politecnico di Milano, Enrico Mattiazzi, che ha dato le basi per lo sviluppo di questa tesi, seguito da una revisione di diversi testi sul Supply Chain Risk Management (SCRM). Come era facilmente immaginabile, l’azienda dominante ha nelle mani la scelta del fornitore, che può sostituire con una ditta o con un'altra, influenzando quindi le imprese sotto di lui. Per quanto riguarda i rischi che le sopra citate imprese si trovano ad affrontare, viene evidenziato nello studio che il rischio di sostituibilità, la gestione / pratica finanziaria e l’interruzione operativa sono i più comuni. Al fine di mitigarli, è stato evidenziato che le strategie di mitigazione in cui un’impresa dominante è coinvolta sono solitamente strategie supply chain to supply chain passive.
