Una città sopra l'altra. Progetto di ampliamento per il Politecnico di Milano a Città Studi

The project for the expansion of the Politecnico di Milano in Città Studi stems from the concrete need to provide the polytechnic institution with new spaces for teaching and study, new solutions for student accommodation and collective services able to establish a relationship of reciprocity between the university settlement model and the urban context in which it is located. The choice of the place of the project is in fact justified in the will to place itself in continuity with the university vocation of this part of the city, inaugurated by the historical project of Città Studi at the beginning of the last century. The project achieves its own internal coherence by working on the boundary conditions at different scales and proposing a reflection on the potential of an urban design based on principles of openness and inclusion. The ideality of the project consists in connecting the reality of the historical city to that of the fertile Lombard countryside, going beyond the urban plans and the infrastructural limits inherited from the nineteenth-century Milan present in Città Studi. From this interpretation comes the mainly linear composition of the project: a long building for teaching raised from the ground becomes an expression of this ideality and, like a large infrastructure, connects all the parts of the project. The theater, the student residences and the library constitute the collective services necessary to integrate the Campus with the pre-existing urban fabric and are located along via Bassini, the main axis that takes up the old layout of the highway. The ateliers for the faculty of architecture instead compare themselves with the eighteenth-century pavilions of the Polytechnic, along the Via Ponzio, and constitute the direct reinterpretation.

Il progetto di ampliamento del Politecnico di Milano a Città Studi nasce dall’esigenza concreta di dotare l’istituzione politecnica di nuovi spazi per la didattica e lo studio, di nuove soluzioni per l’abitare studentesco e di servizi collettivi in grado di stabilire una relazione di reciprocità tra il modello insediativo universitario e il contesto urbano in cui si colloca. La scelta del luogo di progetto trova infatti ragione nella volontà di porsi in continuità con la vocazione universitaria di questa parte di città, inaugurata dal progetto storico di Città Studi all’inizio del secolo scorso. Il progetto raggiunge una propria coerenza interna lavorando sulle condizioni al contorno alle diverse scale e proponendo una riflessione sulle potenzialità di un disegno urbano basato su principi di apertura e inclusione. L’idealità del progetto consiste nel collegare la realtà della città storica a quella della fertile campagna lombarda, oltrepassando i piani urbanistici e i limiti infrastrutturali ereditati dalla Milano Ottocentesca presenti a Città Studi. Da questa interpretazione nasce la composizione principalmente lineare del progetto: un lungo edificio per la didattica sollevato dal suolo diventa espressione di questa idealità e, come una grande infrastruttura, mette in collegamento tutte le parti del progetto. Il teatro, le residenze per studenti e la biblioteca costituiscono i servizi collettivi necessari a integrare il Campus con il tessuto urbano preesistente e si trovano lungo via Bassini, asse principale che riprende l’antica giacitura della strada maestra. Gli atelier per la facoltà di architettura invece si confrontano con i padiglioni ottocenteschi del Politecnico, lungo la via Ponzio, e ne costituiscono la diretta reinterpretazione.
