The purpose of the thesis’s research is the realization of a new urban regeneration project in the Zhangqiaotilan neighborhood, a city’s district that needs improvement. Primarily, an urban regeneration project is a design that has the aim to improve a setting visibly damaged taking in consideration different perspectives, for instance, the environmental, the economical, the sociological and the cultural ones. Nowadays usually this process is really connected with the bottom-up approach with the intent to create settings in accord with the needs of the citizen and in order not to lose the sense of attachment of a place. In relation to this, before the realization of the project, an accurate study related to the identity of a place is needed. But how to do it? What is the identity of a place? How is it possible to recognize and identify it in a city and more specific in a neighborhood? The thesis has been realized in the first part with the aim to understand the meaning of the concept of identity of a place and all the components that form it: social dimension, personal dimension and physical dimension. This study has been applied in the reality of the Zhangqiaotilan neighborhood, in Shanghai. The site appears nowadays with a lot of problems such as, overcrowding, unsafe buildings and streets, inadequately hygienic conditions and, in general, an insane environment. These characteristics are visible through the district. All these facets make the area interesting in trying to understand which kind of identity can be situated there and if there is something that must be preserved. Thanks to the participation of different habitants, a study about all factors that have to be involved in the analysis to understand the presence of the identity of a place has been possible and the result is that the identity does not happen only in marvelous environments, but it is instead related to the other dynamics that are intricate in a neighborhood, as the community, the long permanence in a setting or the memories and the feelings that an environment trigger in the inhabitants. After the comprehension of the concept of identity of a place, the methodology applies in the research, to understand its presence in the neighborhood, object of analysis, is complex and tries to study all the components related to the main concept. Different methods as the qualitative one and quantitative one, with their relative instruments, are applied. There are not so many researches that study the identity of a place under an urban planning point of view, this thesis has the main purpose to define it and find a straightforward way to study it. Three components of the identity of a place are defined: social dimension, personal dimension and physical dimension. Studying them in a separate way to better understand their important in the analyzed neighborhood make understand how their properties are intrinsic connected and how the physical setting can create memories and sense of attachment even in hopeless neighborhood. Or make understand how the social aspects and the personal perception generate attachment in these kind of neighborhood, all verified notion within the thesis work. The second part is dedicated to the innovative design project for the neighborhood starting from the physical dimension coming up during the previous analysis, in particular from the one related to the entities inside the district. The approach takes in consideration what the habitants want and try to preserve the Chinese structures and the sense of community.
