In the last few years, the construction of high-speed railways for passenger trains has been an activity carried out by most of the European countries. This is due to the fact that the transport demand is constantly evolving and there is a need to be competitive with the air and road transport, in terms of time and costs. Regarding the freight train transport, the main scope is to obtain an efficient and environmentally friendly system with the capacity to support the growing goods demand. The aim of this project is to find the technical and economical conditions in order to analyse the feasibility of a fringe goods transport through the Spanish high speed train network. On the one hand, the vertical stresses induced to the rail track by the freight trains have been analysed. These have been divided in two groups depending on the highest achievable speed. On the other hand, a study has been carried out to evaluate the possibility to introduce this service in the Spanish train network depending on the existing schedule. The two case studies have been chosen on the basis of the highest goods demand, which are the connection between Barcelona and Madrid and the north to south travel (from Perpignan to Seville). Once the technical issues have been evaluated, an assessment regarding the economical ones has been conducted. This has let us to make a comparison between the train and the road goods transport, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages. Finally, some hypothesis have been made of the freight demand evolution so as to consider other alternatives that could be applied in the foreseeable future.
Caso Barcellona-Madrid, caso Perpignano-Siviglia

Abstract
In the last few years, the construction of high-speed railways for passenger trains has been an activity carried out by most of the European countries. This is due to the fact that the transport demand is constantly evolving and there is a need to be competitive with the air and road transport, in terms of time and costs. Regarding the freight train transport, the main scope is to obtain an efficient and environmentally friendly system with the capacity to support the growing goods demand. The aim of this project is to find the technical and economical conditions in order to analyse the feasibility of a fringe goods transport through the Spanish high speed train network.
