Radici. Proposta di riqualificazione di un'architettura rurale nel Salento

The traditional architectural heritage of Puglia represents this place memory, it reflects the local community and the territory culture and can be the origin of resources potentially used to achieve strategical local development goals. Such a restoring approach cannot exclude the in-depth knowledge of the characteristics of rural heritage before any intervention, in order not only to protect and enhance the artefacts, the landscape and environment, but also to achieve wider developmental targets for the region. The lack of knowledge of the rural heritage, on the contrary, does not allow its conservation, it determines its irreparable damage or even degradation as a result of recovery, extension or change of use, incompatible with the identity of the building and the landscape it is based in. The thesis work starts from these considerations: how do we intervene on a rural artefact? What potential can it represent for the territory? Are there laws protecting this widespread architecture of the Apulian tradition? Through a path that goes from the general to the detail, we try to answer these questions. The first chapter focuses on rural architecture in the Italian landscape. The second chapter explores the territorial features of Puglia. The subject is developed from the historical, cultural and social point of view. In the third chapter we move on to Salento and we analyse the types of stone that are more present in the territory, with a deeper study of the trulli form type. The fourth chapter deals with the laws that protect the Apulian landscape: the Regional Territorial Landscape Plan (PPTR) and the guidelines of the strategic scenario. The fourth chapter is a review of the most emblematic case studies. Finally, in the sixth and seventh chapters we enter even more specifically in the matter, as the knowledge acquired in the previous chapters is applied to an existing rural artefact. In particular, in the sixth chapter, the structure under study is described and contextualized, and its field survey reported, is the starting point for the seventh and final chapter in which a redevelopment and re-use of the building is proposed for residential purposes.

Il Patrimonio architettonico tradizionale pugliese costituisce la memoria del luogo, identifica culturalmente la comunità locale ed il territorio e può generare risorse strategiche per raggiungere obiettivi di sviluppo locale. Un approccio al recupero attento a questi aspetti non può prescindere dalla conoscenza approfondita dei caratteri identitari del patrimonio rurale prima di ogni intervento, al fine non solo di tutelare e valorizzare i manufatti e il contesto paesaggistico, ma di raggiungere obiettivi più ampi di sviluppo della Regione. La scarsa conoscenza del patrimonio rurale, infatti, non consentendone la conservazione, determina il suo irreparabile degrado o la compromissione anche a seguito di interventi di recupero, ampliamento o cambio di destinazione d’uso incompatibili con l’identità del manufatto e del paesaggio che lo accoglie. Il lavoro di tesi parte proprio da queste considerazioni: come si interviene su un manufatto rurale? Quali potenzialità può rappresentare per il territorio? Esistono leggi che tutelano queste architetture diffuse della tradizione pugliese? Attraverso un percorso che va dal generale al particolare, si cerca di rispondere a questi quesiti. Nel primo capitolo si inquadra l’architettura rurale in pietra a secco nel panorama italiano. Nel secondo capitolo si approfondiscono i caratteri territoriali della Puglia e si inquadra il tema dal punto di vista storico, culturale e sociale. Nel terzo capitolo si passa al Salento e si analizzano le tipologie in pietra che più sono presenti nel territorio. Nel quarto capitolo si affronta il tema delle leggi che tutelano il paesaggio pugliese: il Piano Paesaggistico Territoriale Regionale (PPTR) e le Linee guida dello scenario strategico. Il quarto capitolo è una rassegna di casi studio più emblematici. Infine, nel sesto e settimo capitolo si applicano le conoscenze acquisite nei capitoli precedenti ad un manufatto rurale esistente. In particolare, nel sesto capitolo si inquadra e si descrive la struttura oggetto di studio e se ne riporta il rilievo svolto, punto di partenza per il settimo e ultimo capitolo in cui si propone un intervento di riqualificazione e riuso dell’edificio a fini abitativi.
