Urban forest. Dormitories for foreign students in Warsaw

One of the biggest weakness in large metropolises is the big coefficient of urbanization and little greenery inside the city. Usually people who want to rest and breath the fresh air are forced to go somewhere outside the city. Another aspect this thesis is dealing with is student housing. There are more and more people studing in the World. The number of students seeking study abroad is also rising. There are now 3.7 million international students in the world. This is an increase of 77% compared to 2000. Developing countries which has an enormous demand for higher education will be unable to ensure sufficient number of places for future students. Therfore the main assumption is the creation of „Urban forest” a forest in the city, to enter a bit more greenery to the city. Adding at the same time more peace and nature to the city - in this case the capital of Poland. The first step is to extend the existing greenery so that it will become significant in the urban tissue. Close to the site there is a big area of beautiful greenery which is in fact under protection due to the Natura 2000 program. The abandoned area of an old port will be tightly covered with trees. The created area will be attractive for two reasons. First of all, it is located in the city center, close to the central station, the subway station and other important institutions. Secondly, greenery filled to the brim as a contrast to the existing urban tissue. In the forest thus created, there will be towers with flats for foreign students participating in the Study in Poland program. Such conditions will be a kind of showcase due to the aesthetic values of beautiful nature but also peace and harmony that fosters self-development and learning. The towers will be built in the spirit of modernism, so recognizable in warsaw. The main architectural inspiration and at the same time the desire to inscribe in the style of Warsaw are modernist architecture of apartment buildings, blocks of flats and also public buildings. Simple details, geometric forms, bright flats, no plaster details, concrete and wood - these are the key-words of this project.

Una delle più grandi debolezze nelle grandi metropoli è l'alto coefficiente di urbanizzazione oltre che la bassa percentuale di verde nelle città. Solitamente, chiunque voglia riposarsi e respirare aria fresca è costretto ad andare fuori città. Un altro aspetto sul quale si concentra questo lavoro di tesi è relativo agli alloggi per studenti. Ad oggi, ci sono sempre più persone che studiano e la percentuale di studenti che decidono di andare all'estero è sempre in crescita. Attualmente, si stimano 3.7 milioni di studenti al mondo, con un aumento del 77% rispetto al 2000. Con questi dati alla mano, si può dedurre che i Paesi in via di sviluppo con un alto tasso di richiesta di istruzione universitaria, non saranno capaci di garantire un adeguato numero di alloggi per gli studenti futuri. Dunque, il primo presupposto è la creazione del 'Bosco Urbano', un bosco nella città ideato per dare spazio a più aree verdi all'interno di essa, aggiungendo allo stesso tempo pace e natura nella città - nel caso specifico la capitale della Polonia. Il primo passo prevede l'estensione del verde esistente, fino a renderlo elemento significante del tessuto urbano. Proprio vicino al sito c'è, infatti, una vasta area verde sotto protezione dal programma Natura 2000. L'area abbandonata del vecchio porto verrà completamente ricoperta da alberi e l'area creata diventerà, in questo modo, attrattiva per due motivi principali, primo tra tutti la sua posizione centrale, la vicinanza alla stazione centrale e la presenza della fermata della metropolitana oltre che di altre varie istituzioni. In secondo luogo, lo strabordante verde, il quale diventerà un elemento di contrasto all'interno del tessuto urbano esistente. Nel bosco creato, pertanto, saranno ospitate torri con piattaforme per gli studenti stranieri che parteciperanno al programma 'Studiare in Polonia'. Tutti questi elementi fungeranno da vetrina espositiva per la città stessa, supportata dal valore estetico della bellezza della natura e dal senso di calma ed armonia che incentivano lo sviluppo e l'apprendimento. Le torri saranno costruite seguendo lo spirito del modernismo, particolarmente riconoscibile a Varsavia, iscrivendo lo stile della città e facendo delle sue architetture moderne, quali edifici pubblici e blocchi residenziali, l'elemento principale di ispirazione architettonica. Dettagli semplici, forme geometriche, appartamenti luminosi, assenza di decorazioni di intonaco, uso di cemento e legno - queste le parole chiave del progetto.
