For a long period of time, permanent architecture has been correlated by architects with sustainable architecture, the longer the building stands, the more sustainable it is. For a moment the idea seems convincing, after all, who wants to build a building and then dispose of after a short period of use? It is clear this would be a total waste of resources. Others argue that the growing need for mobility and adaptability in our contemporary societies, along with the fast-technological advancement are rendering our buildings obsolete much quicker than ever before, therefore they call for a more flexible and adaptable model for architecture. This thesis attempts to investigate the potential of temporary architecture within the context of mega-events, with a special focus on world's fairs "Expos". First, by investigating the contemporary relevance of temporary architecture. Then, understanding the tradition of mega-events, and their implications for the city during and after the event. After that, it analyses how temporary architecture is used in the context of mega-events, their different applications, and the different approaches involved by analyzing relevant case studies. The final design project is a modular Kit of Parts system that has different combination scenarios to meet different overlay functions during Expo 2020 in Dubai, UAE. The goal is to realize an adaptable and seamless/unified -yet context specific- design approach to the otherwise distinct overlay elements inside the Expo site. The concept has been tested using intensive model making, structural simulations, and to scale prototypes.

Abstract
The concept has been tested using intensive model making, structural simulations, and to scale prototypes.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
