Nice, French city on the Mediterranean Sea, is the most important center of the French Riviera. With its metropolitan area Nice reaches considerable dimensions, its position is strategic, it has a large port, a constantly expanding railway and its airport is the second most important in France. This infrastructural development has allowed the city to become a very popular tourist destination. In recent years, the construction of the new city tramway line is under way. The infrastructure, 11.3 km long and equipped with 20 stations, follows the West-East axis of the city connecting the port, located within the ancient part of Nice, with the airport, located peripherally in a contemporary scenario. In the middle of the tramway line there is the "Magnan" stop, where the project develops. The Magnan river is the fulcrum of the project. After the Paillon and the Var, the Magnan is the main river of Nice. The district of La Madeleine, along the Magnan valley, is a suburban area. It has a recent birth and a development linked to the expansion of the city and the growth of industries. At the end of the nineteenth century, in fact, the Madeleine was an area with predominantly agricultural activities and the river flowed freely in its irregular bed. The cover works of the Magnan, begun in 1926 and completed in 1960, allowed industrial growth. However, the river is only covered in its lower part. The design intent is to increase the attractiveness of the Magnan valley, attracting the citizens inside and inviting them to discover the beauties. To do this, the reopening of the river is essential. Inside the river bed there is a linear park to connect "the sea and the mountain" and to allow people to rediscover an absent nature in the valley. The first part of the project developes in paths that climb among the cultivated terraces, to discover the agricultural origins of this area. The design strategy uses two directions: a longitudinal direction along the river and a transversal one that leads back to the paths, sometimes dug into the mountain. The same strategy is implemented near the sea, where the project takes three alignments: the first is that along the river, the second and third, orthogonal to the previous direction, are related respectively to the tranway and the Promenade des Anglais. In this place, where the tramway passes with the stop "Magnan", there is the most important part of the project: the museum. It is completely hypogeum and it is located in the portion of ground between the road and the river, using the underground tunnel of the Magnan, as a fundamental pre-existence from which the project takes shape. The intervention, in fact, proposes to restore the relationship with the river Magnan, including it inside, and to establish a direct connection with the stop of the tranway, making it become one of the main entrances to the exhibition path.
