In this work, I explore the themes of distances, boundaries, and their inconsistency, contextualized in my journey, that of an Iranian young woman in Milan. These themes are developed with a specific reference to the ancient collection of stories of One Thousand and One Nights and its protagonist, Shahrzad. Here, I indeed elaborate on such themes by picturing life moments in Milan with the specific focus on women and the various aspects of femininity, and by adopting the main narrative characteristics of this masterpiece, such as intertextuality, transposability, recursion, iteration and suspension. The work includes two main parts: a collection of illustrations and the project of an installation. The first part of the work comprises one hundred and one illustrations. They are realized from a thousand and one photographs depicting women life moments in Milan, and come in two versions, a digital and a paper, handcrafted one, realized by means of a customized manual-printing and manipulation technique. With these illustrations, I figuratively depict women finding their dimensions and gradually discovering new facets of femininity by setting, reshaping and dissolving their boundaries and distances with the outer world. The second part of the work is, instead, devoted to the project of an installation designed to exhibit the realized illustrations in a way to further elaborate on the concept of translation and intertextuality. The proposed installation consists in an optical square room with the illustrations arranged on the ceiling, a mirror floor where they reflect and a woman standing inside on a pedestal, and reading the story of another Shahrzad. The installation itself represents a story being narrated: pictures are taken of each people entering and exiting the room, and are projected - overlapped - on the internal walls until they reach the overall number of one thousand and one. In so doing, realized from one thousand and one pictures, one hundred and one illustrations finally give birth to one thousand and one pictures again, all of them constituting and completing this story of Shahrzad in Milan.
In questo lavoro esploro i temi delle distanze, dei confini e della loro inconsistenza, contestualizzati nel mio viaggio, quella di una giovane donna iraniana a Milano. Questi temi sono sviluppati con uno specifico riferimento allʼantica collezione di storie di Mille e una Notte e alla sua protagonista, Shahrzad. Approfondisco questi temi dipingendo momenti della vita a Milano con un focus specifico sulle donne e sui vari aspetti della femminilità, e adottando le principali caratteristiche narrative di quest’opera, come lʼintertestualità, la traduttività, la ricorsione, lʼiterazione e la sospensione. Il lavoro comprende due parti principali: una raccolta di illustrazioni e il progetto di unʼinstallazione. La prima parte del lavoro comprende cento e uno illustrazioni accompagnate da didascalie narrative. Sono ottenute combinando mille e una fotografia ritraenti i momenti della vita delle donne a Milano, e sono realizzate in due versioni, una digitale e una cartacea, mediante una mia tecnica di stampa e manipolazione manuale. Con queste illustrazioni dipingo in modo figurato le donne che trovano le loro dimensioni e scoprono gradualmente nuove sfaccettature della femminilità impostando, rimodellando e dissolvendo i loro confini e le distanze con il mondo esterno. La seconda parte del lavoro è, invece, dedicata al progetto di unʼinstallazione pensata per esporre le illustrazioni realizzate, in modo da approfondire ulteriormente il concetto di traduzione e intertestualità. Lʼinstallazione proposta consiste in una stanza ottica quadrata con le illustrazioni disposte sul soffitto, un pavimento a specchio dove queste ultime si riflettono, e una donna in piedi su un piedistallo che legge la storia di un’altra Shahrzad. Lʼinstallazione stessa è una storia che viene narrata: vengono scattate delle foto alle persone che entrano ed escono dalla stanza, e sono proiettate, sovrapposte, sulle pareti interne fino a raggiungere il numero complessivo di mille e uno. Così facendo, un migliaio di immagini danno infine luce a mille immagini ancora: esse costituiscono e completano questa storia di una Shahrzad a Milano.
