The design is a concept that describes the cultural behavior or behavior-related ideology of human beings. From the perspective of the essence of design, human design behavior refers to the earliest conscious behavior. Therefore, design can be regarded as the plans that human beings make for upcoming behaviors during or before they take actions for certain demands. The concept of “design” in this paper includes ancient, modern and contemporary Chinese design. In terms of design production mode, Chinese design can be divided into two stages, literally, handicraft industry stage and large-scale machine industry stage, the watershed of which is the Xinhai Revolution. It has passed over ten of thousands of years from the generation of pottery to the handicraft industry stage before the large-scale machine industry became leading production form. Unique and brilliant achievements have been made in the entire history of human design and handicraft industry. Hence, both Chinese and Western design has a long history. Chinese design ideology originates from the scholars in the pre-Qin period (21st century BC - 221 BC) and Western design ideology originates to the period of ancient Greece and Rome. After over a hundred years of transformation and development, modern Chinese design has made great achievements. Many professional schools and design agencies have won countless international awards. Some cities such as Shenzhen, Shanghai, Beijing and Wuhan are even entitled as “City of Design”. However, during the rapid development process, there are still many problems, such as lack of self-owned brand, plagiarism and poor quality, etc., reflecting that Chinese design lacks independent disciplinary development and ideology. The main reason is that Chinese design does not have its own language, discourse and value system. This paper focuses on nine key words to evaluate and discuss Chinese design. The nine key words are: Intelligent, Refinement, Artisan, Learning, Fake, Tofu Residues, Policy, Wangshuism and Internet. Based on the research, an exhibition is designed with the 9 key words as the theme.
