The thesis begins with an analysis of the perception of the city of Monterrey, Mexico through the construction of a visual urban imagery. The photographic and artistic research is divided into several thematic chapters: Early Mapping concerns the relationship between the territory and the city, Pure Land the way in which the people perceived the landscape, Human and Mountain the local identity, Architecture in the Landscape the way in which the buildings have been placed in relationship with the context, City of Mountains the overall urban-territorial vision, and A Living Landscape finally focuses on the climatic and ephemeral conditions of the place. The following chapters are divided in three subtopics. The Geographical Context describes physical conditions of the country, the territorial mountain range and the project’s site. A catalogue of the regional and local flora and fauna is compiled in order to propose the ecosystems to be used in the landscape project. The agricultural region is described to show the importance of shaping productive landscapes. The geological plans relating to the territory, the project area and its context are also examined. The section entitled Quarries as Architecture investigates the quarries’ landscape as opportunities, from historical regeneration projects to recent ones. Botanical Landscapes review examples of botanical gardens focused on local vegetation, and particular preservation gardens of desert and semi-desert regions. Finally, the project is presented starting with the Ecological Corridors on regional, territorial and urban scales. The Historical Evolution of the quarry shows the change of seasons and the recovery of wild vegetation. The Masterplan shows the idea of creating a public space, as a theater that looks at the city from the mountain, but also vice versa. The Main Stage Plan explain the proposal of landscape regeneration through a botanical intervention placed in particular islands implemented in different phases, which will progressively spread to the rest of the quarry environment. These actions, together with the park program will create a new ecology and a new public place at the disposal of the inhabitants, able to bring the mountain back to the city of Monterrey.
