The thesis is focused on the use and implementation of nonlinear viscous fluid damper (VFD), taking into account two values in the damping exponent, α, of 0.25 and 0.50, in a typical hospital building in the city of Bogota, Colombia. Three nonlinear time history analysis was carried out for: the original building, a building with modification in its walls, and finally the modified structure with dampers. Based on these analyzes, the performance of the building was measured, where it was subjected to three representative seismic signals for the country, which were scaled to 0.40 g and subsequently to 0.60 g for the design of the VFD. The results obtained were compared in terms of level of damage measured from the plastic hinges that were generated, in displacements and drifts, and the curve of the energy balance of the system. Finally, it was identified that the study building has a better behavior in Y direction with dampers, and that the use of them reduces the ductility demand, as well as their displacements and therefore the drifts. Another important aspect was to determine that by using a higher alpha, in this case of 0.50, best results are achieved.
