Food wastage is a huge problem arising in today's world. It has become a serious issue in our society in the last years that affects “poor and rich countries” equally and according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) almost half of all produced food will never be consumed. A recent survey conducted by FAO has estimated that more than 40% of food waste occurs in industrialized countries in the process of distribution and consumption. In Italy the amount of food surplus is equal to 5.6 million tons per year, of which 5.1 million tons become waste. This amount of waste accounts for 15.4% of consumption. The cost of food waste is not only social but also economic and environmental. Overall, in Italy, 12.6 billion euros have been lost each year from food produced and wasted, and 13 million tons of CO2 emission caused from this waste. By wasting food, we also waste the “time and energy” that we have used to produce the food and as well our “natural resources” and the “limited available agricultural land” will be used up which could be handled in a much better and sustainable way. Additionally, waste has a strong financial impact and affects the environment including the overall greenhouse gas emission. Hence, this thesis aims to reduce food wastage by means of a smart phone application that helps keep track of products expiration dates and returns, among other useful information, a color coded scheme for prioritizing the display of those products closest to their expiry date. Using this, we will enable NPOs and other potential users to identify wasteful practices and correct such misuse of precious resources. Currently there are some applications for adding products and their information but they are not streamlined. To the best of our knowledge no application use the barcode scanner to make data entry faster for the purpose of tracking food exceedance. Significant improvements are made in the application to make data entry easier and faster.

Abstract
Significant improvements are made in the application to make data entry easier and faster.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
