The aim of this thesis was to create an instrument able to measure the thickness of transparent, colored and multilayer plastic films during production in an industrial environment. The measuring instrument is based on a low coherence interferometer in a particular optical fiber configuration which makes it particularly suitable for the measurement of plastic film thicknesses even in vibration. In the first part of this work we briefly describe the process of production of plastic films by extrusion, the design specifications and measurement techniques available on the market, illustrating their advantages and disadvantages. Subsequently, after a brief theoretical discussion on the concepts of interference and on the structure of the interferometer, the diagram of the meter is introduced, analyzing the individual blocks. The last part shows some measurements taken on film samples. The instrument achieved satisfactory results and proved reliable.

Abstract
The instrument achieved satisfactory results and proved reliable.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
