In limine construction. Salt warehouses in Mantua. Costruire in limine. I magazzini del sale a Mantova

The project deals with the recovery and reuse of the Magazzini del Sale in Mantua. Known today as "ex deposito dei Monopoli di Stato" are an important testimony of the development of the city because the two buildings from which it is composed are linked by a supporting wall that marked the limit between the Civitas Vetus and the Suburbio. The two builidngs are respectively the Warehouse built at the beginning of the fifteenth century and the Gonzagese stables built about a hundred years later, which together with the original wall constitute three themes to be studied individually but deeply interconnected. Analyzing the main functions of the surrounding buildings and considering the strategic position inside the historic center, the complex is located within a system of cultural activities for both citizens and tourists. The design strategy aim to integrate the building by giving it flexible functions and characteristics made possible by its morphological peculiarities: the large and empty volume of the warehouse can compensate for the lack of versatility of the Bibiena theater that‘s not suitable for hosting contemporary shows and performances. Moreover the stables will host multiple functions: the architectural value of the ground floor will be a perfect setting for the theater foyer and for a literary café where to admire the original Medieval wall and Its stratifications. While upstairs there will be rehearsal rooms for musicians and dancers in a flexible and adaptable environment thanks to the unrestrained floor plan made by the punctual system of support for the metal roof trusses.

Il progetto si occupa del recupero e rifunzionalizzazione dei Magazzini del Sale di Mantova. Chiamati oggi “ex deposito dei Monopoli di Stato” sono una testimonianza importante dello sviluppo della città in quanto i due edifici da cui è composto sono legati da un muro portante che segnava il limite tra la Civitas Vetus e il Suburbio (la prima espansione oltre le mura). I due volumi sono rispettivamente il Magazzino realizzato agli inizi del 1400 e le scuderie Gonzaghesche costruite circa cento anni più tardi, che insieme al muro originario costituiscono tre temi da trattare singolarmente ma profondamente interconnessi. Analizzando le principali funzioni degli edifici limitrofi e data la posizione strategica rispetto al centro storico il complesso si trova entro un sistema di attività culturali rivolte ai cittadini e turisti. La strategia attuata è quella di cercare di integrare l’edificio attribuendogli funzioni e caratteristiche flessibili, possibilità data dalle sue peculiarità morfologiche: il volume ampio e totalmente libero del magazzino può sopperire alla scarsa versatilità del teatro Bibiena posto dirimpetto non adatto ad ospitare spettacoli contemporanei o sperimentali. Distintamente l’ambiente delle scuderie ospiterà molteplici funzioni: il pregio architettonico del piano terra sarà una cornice perfetta per il foyer del teatro e per un caffè letterario da cui si potrà ammirare il muro medievale originario e le sue stratificazioni. Mentre al piano superiore vi saranno sale prova per musicisti e ballerini in un ambiente flessibile ed adattabile grazie all’ampia luce della sala risultante del sistema puntuale di sostegno alle capriate metalliche della copertura.
