New botanic institute in the Giardino dei Semplici. A balance between ethics and aesthetics

The following thesis of Laurea Magistrale develops a project hypothesis for a new intervention in a sector of the architectural complex of Ducal Palace of Mantova. The work continues with the research carried out during the Final Workshop Antico e Nuovo (May 2018) but grows a different project in response to questions that were born during the workshop and in relation to the same site: the Giardino dei Semplici. The constructed object of study is the Giardino dei Semplici, a garden whose origin dates back to the beginning of the sixteenth century, although the first constructions in the place began in the middle of the fifteenth century. The topic that this case deals with is mainly the contact of a new architecture with the old one. Although it is a problem that requires a long development and that currently presents diverse positions accompanied by great controversy, this design hypothesis tries to establish the main bases for a correct action on the architectural historical asset, keeping it in mind as unique, unrepeatable, and loaded with potentialities in this particular case. This position of attention and respect for the architectural heritage will mark the entire project procedure justifying each decision, beginning in the search for a reason why to intervene, until the final result of image and function. In order to comply with what was first described, the guidelines of the old-new subject are established at the beginning and then a critical investigation of the architectural heritage in question, so that through the reflection, inconveniences are detected to which possible solutions can be given with the new element, whose program demands specific requirements to be also studied with care. The aesthetic framing of the historic site will try to be answered in the same way as the functional demands of the new program, resulting in a new project that solves the first problems detected on the site.

La seguente tesi di Laurea Magistrale sviluppa un'ipotesi progettuale per un nuovo intervento in un settore del complesso architettonico del Palazzo Ducale di Mantova. Il lavoro continua con la ricerca svolta durante il Workshop Finale Antico e Nuovo (maggio 2018) ma sviluppa un progetto diverso in risposta alle domande che sono nate durante il workshop e in relazione allo stesso sito: il Giardino dei Semplici. L'oggetto di studio costruito è il Giardino dei Semplici, un giardino la cui origine risale agli inizi del XVI secolo, anche se le prime costruzioni del luogo iniziarono verso la metà del XV secolo. L'argomento trattato da questo caso è principalmente il contatto di una nuova architettura con quella vecchia: sebbene sia un problema che richiede un lungo sviluppo e che al momento presenta diverse posizioni accompagnate da grandi controversie, quest'ipotesi progettuale cerca di stabilire le basi principali per una corretta azione sul patrimonio storico architettonico, tenendolo presente come unico, irripetibile, e carico di potenzialità in questo caso particolare. Questa posizione di attenzione e rispetto per il patrimonio architettonico segnerà l'intera procedura del progetto giustificando ogni decisione, iniziando nella ricerca di un motivo per cui intervenire, fino al risultato finale dell'immagine e della funzione. Al fine di rispettare ciò che è stato descritto in precedenza, le linee guida del antico-nuovo soggetto sono stabilite all'inizio e quindi un'indagine critica del patrimonio architettonico in questione, in modo che attraverso la riflessione, vengano rilevati inconvenienti a cui le possibili soluzioni possono essere dato con il nuovo elemento, il cui programma richiede requisiti specifici da studiare con cura. L'inquadramento estetico del sito storico proverà a rispondere allo stesso modo delle esigenze funzionali del nuovo programma, dando vita a un nuovo progetto che risolve i primi problemi rilevati sul sito.
