This research presents an approach to the traditional earthen building techniques in Ecuador, with a focus on the adobe constructions in Quito, specifically in the historical center in the Colonial Period. The existing protection of the heritage properties, from an international and national framework, is analyzed in order to comprehend the current situation with regard to the protection and register of earthen architecture. Furthermore, a case study of eighteen colonial houses was studied, from which six buildings were surveyed to characterized the constructive elements, focusing on the earthen load bearing walls and its elements. This study offers a frame of reference regarding the relevant properties of these constructions and although they are a discrete sample, taking into account the number of properties of this character, the results inferred some conclusions that can be useful to improve the way of valuating and cataloguing these properties. Altogether, the use of this document together with the data collected and the instruments proposed, contributes to form a database for the characterization of the earthen building techniques present in Ecuador.
