Rethinking of fontainhas : a new cultural space for the city of Porto

The site is located close to the old city centre by its medieval wall. it clearly shows an open problem that has to do with the destruction of an important part of Porto(fontainhas guindais batalha) and its substitution, back in the 60's, by another urban logic, that separated relevant parts of the city. this intervention was based on the will to articulated the old bridge with other parts of the city. its most relevant remaining element is a viaduct. by now it is functionally obsolete due to the transformations that occured in the last decades. the bridge doesn't have car traffic anymore and another bridge has been built nearby. for us the most important issue is to think about the transformation of cities: the necessity to destroy some of its parts while overlapping other logics, even it breaking connections(something that in certain cases is inevitable) vs the will to transform"naturally", i.e. regarding new interventions as continuities of the existing city. although the site we have chosen shows a specific problem, it raises the abve mentioned general question, which we believe is highly relevant nowdays all around the world.

Il sito si trova vicino al centro storico con le sue mura medievali. mostra chiaramente un problema aperto che ha a che fare con la distruzione di una parte importante di Porto (fontainhas guindais batalha) e la sua sostituzione, negli anni '60, con un'altra logica urbana, che separava parti rilevanti della città. questo intervento era basato sulla volontà di articolare il vecchio ponte con altre parti della città. il suo elemento rimanente più rilevante è un viadotto. ormai è funzionalmente obsoleto a causa delle trasformazioni avvenute negli ultimi decenni. il ponte non ha più traffico automobilistico e un altro ponte è stato costruito nelle vicinanze. per noi il problema più importante è pensare alla trasformazione delle città: la necessità di distruggere alcune delle sue parti mentre si sovrappongono ad altre logiche, anche rompendo le connessioni (cosa che in certi casi è inevitabile) rispetto alla volontà di trasformare "naturalmente", cioè per quanto riguarda i nuovi interventi come continuità della città esistente. sebbene il sito che abbiamo scelto mostri un problema specifico, solleva la domanda generale sopra menzionata, che riteniamo sia di grande attualità in tutto il mondo.
