From the end of the 20th century to the beginning of the 21st century, many countries and cities are experiencing urban regeneration in the new era. The development and renewal of housing plays an important role in urban regeneration. Europe and China have their own history, social and cultural background, so the urban regeneration of them is also unique. The goal of this dissertation is to focus on housing developments and new tendencies in Europe and China in the context of urban regeneration. In the new era of European urban regeneration, many contemporary housing have been sprung up. In the last 30 years, many new and famous contemporary housing projects have been built. The growing number of distinctive contemporary housing is an inevitable trend. In these new housing projects, I have discovered new tendencies in contemporary housing; in these new housing projects, not only the old generation of famous architects have thought about the design and construction of contemporary housing, but also a young generation of architects express their new design ideas for European housing construction and outlook for the future of European housing. Perhaps this is a new opportunity for urban renewal in Europe, but how to balance the relationship between old and new buildings, how to build new residential buildings in the historical fabric of the city is a big challenge for architects. At the same time, China is also experiencing urban regeneration in the new era. In terms of urban construction and development, China is an emerging country compared to Europe. Although China has a long history, China’s large-scale urban construction and development is much later than Europe. China’s reform and opening up in 1978 was the beginning of China’s comprehensive urban construction. At the beginning of the 21st century, China began urban regeneration in a new era. In China, residential buildings are an important part of the country’s economic and social development. In the urban regeneration of China, a large number of new residential buildings were built. In this process, new housing features have also emerged. Therefore, in terms of housing research in Europe, I first conduct a comprehensive understanding and research on the historical development of modern European housing, and then study the cases of contemporary housing projects and summarize the tendencies in contemporary European housing. In the study of European contemporary housing cases, I use the European architectural competition as the main starting point. In the last 30 years, many European countries have launched various kinds of architectural competitions for European regeneration. Each competition can reflect people’s thinking about current housing situation and the future of European housing, which is helpful for my research. Among many European architectural competitions, I focused on the EUROPAN competition, because this competition is mainly for younger generations of architects involved in the design project, so it is more directly reflected the expectations and ideas about the future of European housing. Finally, in terms of housing research in China, I focus on the construction and development of Shanghai housing. First of all, I also begin my research from a comprehensive understanding and analyses on the historical development of housing. Then, I choose some contemporary housing projects in Shanghai to do the research and summarize the new features of contemporary Chinese housing. The most important thing is to compare and analyze the tendencies in European contemporary housing with the features in contemporary Chinese housing, and summarize the similarities and differences between them. Finally, the enlightenments and suggestions for China’s future housing will be put forward.
