Santa Marta area, a complex that mainly hosts university and cultural facilities at the western end of Venice, has been the protagonist of important architectural and social transformations. Starting from the nineteenth century, the area stands out as an industrial and commercial center, with a morphology strongly characterized by the presence of infrastructures linked to the port and the railway. Following the competition launched in 1998 for the New IUAV headquarters in the Magazzini Frigoriferi area in San Basilio, started with the demolition of the building that stood on the lot and ended with the interruption of works due to a dispute between the company and the designers/clients, the urban profile shows, at this point, a pause in the rhythm of the waterfront towards the Giudecca. For those who cross the shore of the Marittima, the impression is to be in a large and anarchic parking lot. These aspects limit the potential of the area but do not have a decisive influence on its strategic and possible development. Regarding the large infrastructures, PUM 2010 proposes to modify the existing tram project in Piazzale Roma, foreseeing its extension to San Basilio, suggesting for a station in this area. The extension, in addition to serving the university, would significantly improve accessibility to the city center, allowing to pursue other purposes such as traffic reduction and the creation of areas for pedestrian use only. The negative outcome of the competition and the planning of the new tramway line become then an opportunity to rethink the settlement structure and build new social spaces through architecture. The recovery of the area, partly degraded, represents an important opportunity to articulate a project theme, by acting with the construction of new buildings and fabrics to fill leftover spaces, revitalizing the urban landscape with appropriate constructions, conforming the external space , creating synergies and ties between private and collective space. A theme particularly suited to Venice, a city that can no longer grow.

Abstract
A theme particularly suited to Venice, a city that can no longer grow.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
