The thesis analyses the project of the new Metro Line 4 in Milan, with the objective of proposing a contextualization of the planned stations. The research has been developed within the work assigned by the Municipality of Milan to Dastu, contributing in particular to the second phase "M4 meets the city", which has defined a methodology useful to "contextualize" the single stations within their urban context. After retracing the different phases of the project in all its phases, from the first preliminary studies to the final project, the network of the actors and their competences, the research has analysed the role of the Committees and their proposals to limit the impact of the construction sites as well as improve the contextualization of the line. All these cognitive elements have been usefull to frame the approach which has interpret the "contextualization" not only in relation to the design of the surroundings of the stations, but with respect to the entire line, relying on the territorial scheme proposed by the Dastu working group. Therefore, the thesis has defined the catchment area of each station, by measuring pedestrian accessibility to the stations through the construction of isochrones, it has cosidered opportunities offered by the contexts touched by the line and served by the new stations. Moreover, attractors and generators have been mapped, as important elements to which guarantee access from the stations. This approach is motivated by the awareness that an intervention of "contextualization" for the new metro line cannot be concluded by restoring the pre-existing conditions, which is the parameter that guides the design of the current final project. On the contrary, it is necessary to verify the functionality of each station and enlarge its catchment area, by solving problems of discontinuity of pedestrian and bicycle routes. Finally, according to the conducted analysis it has been proposed a classification of the stations. By doing so it has been possible to select two areas of intervention, based on the peculiarities that have emerged: the Segneri station and the San Cristoforo station. Therefore, the final part of the thesis suggests new interventions aimed at the contextualization of the two stations by improving pedestrian accessibility and designing a new network of pedestrian and bicycle paths.
