The universities in medium sized Italy city is highly overlapped with the urban structure .They have insert strong influence on the city on regional or city level, and enjoy a close relation with the city as well. For the universities located in the medium sized Italian cities, the urban structure is more simplified than a big city, the relation between university and city is more obvious to figure out. This thesis will focus on the universities in medium sized cities in Italy. Within this context, the thesis present the structure :(1)interpreting a general introduction of the university distribution in italy (2) making a definition of the relation between city and univesity through literature review (3)developing the definition of the relation between city and university through empirical study (4) summurizing the spatial expansion process of the university in a medium sized city. The empirical study will focus on two points: (1)the role of the university in regional network and in the city itself, (2) analysis of main urban transformation projects concerning the university. The empirical analysis will start from Bologna University, run by 3 main urban transformation projects in the Bologna city, which are: Staveco Project, New building plan of University of Bologna and ROCK project. The analysis of the projects will focus on the detail of the process and evaluation of the project results, to clarify the relation between University of Bologna and the city. The thesis will end with the conclusion of the patterm of university-city relation in correlation with the empirical study, with Pavia University as a comparative case, which has not exerted an obvious impact on the city, as a univeristy with long history.
Le università nella città italiana di medie dimensioni sono fortemente sovrapposte alla struttura urbana. Hanno una forte influenza sulla città a livello regionale o cittadino e godono anche di una stretta relazione con la città. Per le università situate nelle città italiane di medie dimensioni, la struttura urbana è più semplificata di una grande città, il rapporto tra università e città è più ovvio da capire. Questa tesi si concentrerà sulle università in città di medie dimensioni in Italia. All'interno di questo contesto, la tesi presenta la struttura: (1) interpretare un'introduzione generale della distribuzione universitaria in italia (2) definendo la relazione tra città e università attraverso la revisione della letteratura (3) sviluppando la definizione della relazione tra città e università attraverso lo studio empirico (4) che riassume il processo di espansione spaziale dell'università in una città di medie dimensioni. Lo studio empirico si concentrerà su due punti: (1) il ruolo dell'università nella rete regionale e nella città stessa, (2) analisi dei principali progetti di trasformazione urbana riguardanti l'università. L'analisi empirica inizierà dall'università di Bologna, gestita da 3 principali progetti di trasformazione urbana nella città di Bologna, che sono: Progetto Staveco, Nuovo piano edilizio dell'Università di Bologna e progetto ROCK. L'analisi dei progetti si concentrerà sui dettagli del processo e sulla valutazione dei risultati del progetto, per chiarire la relazione tra l'Università di Bologna e la città. La tesi si concluderà con la conclusione del rapporto università-città in correlazione con lo studio empirico, con l'Università di Pavia come caso comparativo, che non ha esercitato un evidente impatto sulla città, come univeristy con una lunga storia.
