Introduction: The hospital is an essential urban element for flows, dimensions and economy; for this reason, it is able to trigger virtuous urban developement processes. The recent examples of urban regeneration in the European scenario highlight strategies, processes and approaches characterized by the role of innovation at different scales, from urban planning, to the building processes and construction technologies. this evolution takes place in order to respond to the needs expressed by a contemporary concept of “City of quality”. The hospital becomes an instrument of urban regeneration through the development of density against deterritorialization, of the type-morphological and functional mixité, of the diversification of users, of the relations between specialized spaces and collective spaces, of attention to social inclusion. Background: The research aims to elaborate indications and design strategies for health structures able to trigger the process of urban regeneration. The first part of this thesis deals with an analysis of the evolution of the hospital model in the course of history in relation to the historical context and its social function. The second part of the research deals with the analysis of ten best practices; particular attention was paid to the study of the ground floor and its ability to interact with the city and its operation. The analyses on the ten case studies were conducted with the same methodology using the Grasshopper software (Rhinoceros plugin) which allowed the identification of an algorithm of analysis infinitely replicable for any case. Through dialogue with some municipal officials, it was also possible to view the variant of PGT, which is now being revised in order to know the exact location of the SS. Paolo and Carlo hospital project. Finding: The definition of a comparison matrix of the case studies, the identification of the demanding framework of the San Carlo and San Paolo hospitals, together with the urban analyses have allowed to identify the design strategies for the masterplan of the new Milanese hospital. Research outlook: The research allows to have a general picture of the scenario of social and health structures in relation to the theme of urban regeneration, which supports, in the last part of the thesis, the definition of the general masterplan of the new health center SS. Paolo and Carlo.
Paolo e Carlo.
