Someplace else (inhabiting a forgotten island)

Inhabiting a place heads to the definition of identity, a genius loci that portrays and denotes the territory. A place without function, without perception and human presence, remains a suspended place, a non-place. To reinstate an identity for Isola Formica Grande remained uninhabited for a long time, this research tries to develop a way of inhabiting that could allow human presence to unite its perception and its feelings inside the space with the environment. The architectural process starts from the pre-existence of Bellic constructions, bare traces of the voiceless past, and tries to exploit new places to live following the theory of the concept of the house, using its outcomes and adapting them to the island. Guiding this research, there are the words of the last inhabitant of the island, the lighthouse keeper.

Abitare un luogo porta alla definizione di un’identità, un genius loci che definisce e denota il territorio. Un luogo senza funzione, senza percezione, senza la presenza umana, rimane un luogo sospeso. Per restituire un’identità all’Isola Formica Grande rimasta disabitata da molto tempo, questo lavoro cerca di sviluppare una “modalità dell’abitare” che possa permettere alla presenza umana di unire la sua percezione e le sue sensazioni all’interno dello spazio con il territorio. Il processo architettonico ha luogo da pre esistenze belliche, deboli tracce dell’inesorabile passato del territorio e cerca di sviluppare nuovi luoghi da abitare basandosi sul l’analisi del concetto di casa, sfruttandone i significati e adattandoli all’isola. A guidare questo percorso vi sono le parole dell’ultimo abitante dell’isola, il guardiano del faro.
