“To valorize” means emphasizing already existing qualities of goods that have potential characteristics. Historical monuments, religious and military buildings represent a noteworthy social, economic and cultural heritage to the State and to the collectivity, therefore everybody, but specially the designers, have the due to preserve and to hand down them to the future generations. Military architecture, and particularly the fortresses, were really important landmarks and strategic points for the places in which they are located. This thesis proposes the individuation of a strategy that can reconnect the fortresses located all around Portugal, since military buildings are really beautiful and rich of potential. To get this done it is firstly important to reconnect these architectures with a larger system, a net that can valorize the existing heritage following a common thread. The Portuguese Way is connecting all this system, thus becoming, as well as a spiritual journey leading to Santiago de Compostela, a resource for the rediscovery of places, often forgotten, and an opportunity for tourism and economic development of the country. To complement the Portuguese Way, the thesis proposes the insertion of a further route, as an appendix, that can involve all the fortresses located along the Atlantic coast. Regarding the second part of the work, instead, it was decided to deepen and intervene on the area hosting one of the fortresses examined in the first part; the Forte do Pessegueiro, a military building located halfway between the town of Sines and Vila Nova de Milfontes, south of the country. The fortress becomes a place to host and carry out cultural and recreational activities; in support of this, a hostel has been designed next to the fortress, which has the function of hosting both pilgrims who embark on the journey, and those who will have the task of giving a second life to this military building of the late 1500s.

Abstract
The fortress becomes a place to host and carry out cultural and recreational activities; in support of this, a hostel has been designed next to the fortress, which has the function of hosting both pilgrims who embark on the journey, and those who will have the task of giving a second life to this military building of the late 1500s.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
