Pumice industrial sites in Lipari : valorization project in the framework of Unesco Geopark. Crossing Ferlazzo : between the mountain and the sea

Lipari is an island which has a great historical importance. It was significant with its contribution to the Italian economy. It is known for its volcanic origin, Lipari has preserved many of these elements in its landscape. The activity of excavation of the pumice with its plants represents an important historical passage, still can be experienced today in the territory of the island. There are a lot of factories in the area and Ferlazzo is one of these pumice factories. According to UNESCO’s indications, the general objective is to design a “geopark” in the area that involves all the Aeolian islands and, in particular, the enhancement of all the sites linked to the production of pumice, in which the Ferlazzo factory becomes an open-air museum. From a large-scale territorial analysis that investigates the network of existing routes, 3 thematic itineraries have been proposed that can explore the island by subdividing: historical, panoramic and sports routes. The paths are overlaping in some significant nodes, however, the main one is in Ferlazzo which has the role of new cultural and touristic centrality of the island. The factory transformed accessible and able to accommodate multiple functions: a museum part with exhibition areas, reading rooms, a library, conference rooms, places to relax, accommodation part and facilities related with the beach

Lipari è un’isola di grande importanza storica. E’ stata significativa per il suo contributo all’economia italiana. Conosciuta per la sua origine vulcanica, Lipari ha conservato nel proprio paesaggio molti di questi elementi. L’attivita’ di escavazione della pomice con i suoi stabilimenti rappresenta un importante passaggio storico testimoniato ancora oggi nel territorio dell’isola. Ferlazzo è una di queste fabbriche di pomice. L’obiettivo generale e’, secondo le indicazione dell’Unesco, quello di disegnare un “geoparco” che coinvolga tutte le isole Eolie e, nello specifico, la valorizzazione di tutti i siti legati alla produzione della pomice, in cui la fabbrica del Ferlazzo diviene museo all’aperto. Da un’analisi territoriale ad ampia scala che indaga la rete dei percorsi esistenti, sono stati proposti 3 percorsi tematici in grado di esplorare l’isola suddividendo: percorsi storici, panoramici e sportivi. I percorsi si sovrappongono in alcuni nodi significativi, quello principale si trova nel Ferlazzo che assume il ruolo di nuova centralita’ culturale e turistica dell’isola. La fabbrica diventa cosi facilmente accessibile e capace di ospitare molteplici funzioni: una parte museale con aree espositive, sale di lettura, biblioteca, sale conferenze, luoghi di relax, alloggi e stabilimenti legati alla spiaggia.
