Una stanza piena di gente

“The Minds of Billy Milligan” is a book written by Daniel Keyes about the life of Billy Milligan, a man who lived in Ohio between 1955 and 2014 and who was affected by Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). In october 1977 he was arrested for kidnapping, raping and robbing three women; the book starts from this episode and it describes how the psychologists discovered that 24 different personalities “lived” inside Billy’s mind. This project aims to represent all the 24 personalities using the descriptions and the episodes reported n the book. The location chosen for this installation is the Hangar Bicocca, a place characterized by the compleste absence of natural light, ample spaces and high ceilings. For these reasons this location is suitable to hos non-conventional expositions. In particular, the areas used for the installation are the Piazza, the two Naves (right and central) and the Cube. The exposition will have to areas: the first one, the one with the entrance, will recreate in the visitor the sense of confusion the psychologists felt during the psychiatric examination in the discovering that Billy Milligan had multiple personalities. The second one will be dedicated to the representation of all the personalities of Billy. Each personality is indipendent from the other ones and will be represented with dedicated projections, sounds and lights. A prologue, installed between the first and the second area, will describe and explain the different personalities and will contain a brief biography of Billy Milligan. The first personality to be exposed will be Christene together with her brother Christopher, then the most problematic ones: the children David and Danny togehter with Billy and Adalana. Subsequently Allen and Tommy, the major interlocutors with the outer reality will be exposed, followed by the two protectors Arthur and Ragen. The protectors will hide the view of the undesirable personalities and the Master, the main personality whose existence was ignored even by Billy itself. It was the Master to allow the writing of the book. A corridor, containing an excerpt from one of the letters sent by Billy to the writer during hs detention in the criminal madhouse of Lima, will lead the visitor to the exit.

“Una stanza piena di gente” di Daniel Keyes è il titolo del libro che parla della storia di Billy Milligan, un uomo vissuto in Ohiyo tra il 1955 e il 2014 affetto da Disturbo Dissociativo dell’Identità. Nell’ottobre del 1977 fu arrestato con l’accusa di aver sequestrato, stuprato e rapinato tre donne ed è proprio da qui che inizia il primo capitolo del libro che descrive come gli psicologi siano arrivati ad affermare che dentro Billy “vivevano” 24 personalità differenti. Il progetto nasce dalla volontà di rappresentare queste 24 personalità a partire dalle descrizioni e dai fatti contenuti nel libro. Il luogo scelto per questa installazione è l’Hangar Bicocca, un luogo con una totale assenza di luce naturale, ampia metratura, altezze elevate e adatto ad ospitare allestimenti non convenzionali. In particolare lo spazio scelto corrisponde alla zona della Piazza, delle due navate (destra e centrale) e del Cubo. L’allestimento sarà diviso in due zone: la prima, quella d’ingresso, ricreerà nel visitatore la sensazione di confusione provata dagli psicologi durante la perizia psichiatrica, quando hanno appreso che Milligan era una personalità multipla. La seconda sarà dedicata alla rappresentazione delle personalità di Billy, ognuna indipendente dalle altre e caratterizzata da proiezioni, suoni e luci diverse. Un prologo posto tra la prima e la seconda zona, spiegherà l’allestimento e le singole personalità, oltre a fornire un riassunto della vita di Billy Milligan. La prima personalità ad essere allestita sarà Christene insieme a suo fratello Christopher, poi le personalità più problematiche: i bambini David e Danny, con accanto Billy e Adalana. Successivamente verranno disposti i maggiori interlocutori con l’esterno, Allen e Tommy, seguiti dai protettori Arthur e Ragen. I protettori celeranno la vista degli indesiderabili e del Maestro, personalità principale nascosta anche a Billy stesso e colui che ha permesso la stesura del libro. Un corridoio contenente un estratto di una delle lettere che Billy mandava allo scrittore durante il periodo di reclusione nel manicomio criminale di Lima, accompagnerà il visitatore all’uscita.
