After the last design studio in Politecnico di Milano, where we designed and built a community in Villa Arconati, I decided to choose my thesis topic related with community design. First, I started to look through the international competitions, in search for the topics of my interests. One of the main aspects was to design in a different culture and background than what I was used to. Therefore, I chose to design a Cultural Center in Baghdad, Iraq. It was quite a big task : since 2003, during the civil war and US invasion, more than fifty percent of buildings were destroyed, including a big number of historical heritage landmarks. The country is still suffering after the long years of being the hot spot of war in the world. But step by step Iraq and the Iraqi themselves are ready for rebirth. I have to admit, that it was not easy to analyse and understand the local activities, habbits and the way of life; to understand their religious and cultural views. So, I interviewed one Iraqi, who is studying in Politecnico di Milano. With his help and insight, I was able to understand what the locals are used to, what could be the new wind in Baghdad's community and what could be inspiring and entertaining in a historical city. Programme was given by competition, but I personalized it, giving it a community center function. The topic of Oasis, came after understanding the Baghdad's distractions - heat, noise, traffic. Goal was to design something what is not usual; circular forms as a reference to oasis and also to the Round city - first plan of Baghdad, having a centered point with functions distributed around it, completing the city with round wall. Interior spaces were designed inspired by traditional materials and patterns with a touch of new and trending ideas. Each area has a different function - some spaces are casual, some of them are luxurious, but all of it is united by details and touches. This Baghdad's Oasis, as a reference to the nature is alive with a greenery and water in the center of it. Open patio is a heart of the whole project - uniting not only different zones and functions, but also people, who are coming to the center. It is a refugee, a relief. Something different to the heat, something different to the desert sand. The project in total covers around 3000 m2, five different functions and an urban patio park within outside recreation space. Meet, learn, relax, work, share. It is a design and community center where people and culture merge. Come and change what is usual.

In primo luogo, ho iniziato a guardare attraverso le competizioni internazionali, alla ricerca degli argomenti dei miei interessi. Uno degli aspetti principali era progettare in una cultura e uno sfondo diverso da quello a cui ero abituato. Pertanto, ho scelto di progettare un Centro Culturale a Baghdad, in Iraq. È stato un compito abbastanza grande: dal 2003, durante la guerra civile e l'invasione degli Stati Uniti, oltre il cinquanta per cento degli edifici sono stati distrutti, incluso un gran numero di monumenti storici del patrimonio. Il paese sta ancora soffrendo dopo i lunghi anni di essere il punto caldo della guerra nel mondo. Ma, passo dopo passo, l'Iraq e gli iracheni sono pronti per la rinascita. Devo ammettere che non è stato facile analizzare e comprendere le attività locali, le habbits e il modo di vivere; per capire le loro opinioni religiose e culturali. Così, ho intervistato un iracheno che sta studiando al Politecnico di Milano. Con il suo aiuto e la sua intuizione, sono stato in grado di capire a cosa sono abituati i locali, quale potrebbe essere il nuovo vento nella comunità di Baghdad e cosa potrebbe essere stimolante e divertente in una città storica. Il programma è stato dato dalla competizione, ma l'ho personalizzato, assegnandogli una funzione di centro comunitario. Il tema degli Oasis, è venuto dopo aver compreso le distrazioni di Baghdad: calore, rumore, traffico. Lo scopo era progettare qualcosa che non è normale; forme circolari come riferimento all'oasi e anche alla città rotonda - primo piano di Baghdad, che ha un punto centrale con funzioni distribuite attorno ad esso, completando la città con una parete rotonda. Gli spazi interni sono stati progettati ispirandosi a materiali e motivi tradizionali con un tocco di idee nuove e di tendenza. Ogni area ha una funzione diversa: alcuni spazi sono casual, alcuni sono lussuosi, ma tutto è unito da dettagli e tocchi. L'Oasi di Baghdad, come riferimento alla natura, è viva con una vegetazione e acqua al centro. Il patio aperto è il cuore dell'intero progetto, che unisce non solo zone e funzioni diverse, ma anche persone che stanno arrivando al centro. È un rifugiato, un sollievo. Qualcosa di diverso dal caldo, qualcosa di diverso dalla sabbia del deserto. Il progetto copre in totale circa 3000 m2, cinque diverse funzioni e un parco patio urbano all'interno di spazi ricreativi esterni. Incontra, impara, rilassati, lavora, condividi. È un centro di progettazione e di comunità in cui persone e cultura si fondono. Vieni e cambia ciò che è normale.
