Prototyping in the new millennium. A multifaceted tool in the hands of the designer

Prototyping, an activity historcially reserved to designers and engineers, is practiced today by professionals from other fields and amateurs. The increased ineterst in prototyping is due to the widespread of the maker’s movement and the adoption of design techniques in different professions. This study seeks to compare prototyping activites practiced today with that of the past, to pin-point the benefits that were conserved with time. This study aims at sheding light over many characterstics of prototypes, incluing its use as a tool for problem solving and exploration. After analyzing the use of prototypes throughout history up until today, we shall compare how prototypes changed with time, and show how its intrinsic value as a playful carrier of knowledge has always been conserved.

La prototipazione, un'attività storicamente riservata a designer e ingegneri, è praticata oggi da professionisti di altri settori e amatori. L'aumento della durata della prototipazione è dovuto alla diffusione del movimento del produttore e all'adozione di tecniche di progettazione in diverse professioni. Questo studio cerca di confrontare le attività di prototipazione praticate oggi con quella del passato, per individuare i benefici che sono stati conservati nel tempo. Questo studio mira a far luce su molti caratteri del prototipo, includendo il suo uso come strumento per la risoluzione dei problemi e l'esplorazione. Dopo aver analizzato l'uso dei prototipi nel corso della storia fino ad oggi, confronteremo come i prototipi sono cambiati nel tempo e mostrano come il suo valore intrinseco come portatore di conoscenza giocoso sia sempre stato conservato.
