The new central public library of Milan

This project begins with the research of the development of the city of Milan dating back from the formation of the city in the very beginning to the present time. This new central public library belongs to a general idea of renovation in the central area of Milan by a system of cultural institutions, museum-theater-libraries. With the attitude of respecting the history and the memory of the site, a certain part of the existing building has been preserved. Thus, in the urban level, the new building has the commission to spatially connect the Palazzo Sormani, the remaining building and the garden, in order to fulfill the function and create a new urban space. During the design process, a general research about library is also included, with the specific interest of typological evolutions and renovations in the history of library architecture. Hence the design of this project can be seen as an application and renovation of integrating of several spatial types of library building in the history in the contemporary context.

Questo progetto inizia con la ricerca dello sviluppo della città di Milano, che risale alla formazione della città, all'inizio del presente. Questa nuova biblioteca pubblica centrale appartiene a un'idea generale di ristrutturazione nell'area centrale di Milano da un sistema di istituzioni culturali, musei-teatro-biblioteche. Con l'attitudine al rispetto della storia e della memoria del sito, è stata conservata una certa parte dell'edificio esistente. Così, a livello urbano, il nuovo edificio ha l'incarico di collegare spazialmente Palazzo Sormani, l'edificio rimanente e il giardino, al fine di adempiere alla funzione e creare un nuovo spazio urbano. Durante il processo di progettazione, è inclusa anche una ricerca generale sulla biblioteca, con l'interesse specifico di evoluzioni tipologiche e ristrutturazioni nella storia dell'architettura della biblioteca. Quindi il design di questo progetto può essere visto come un'applicazione e rinnovamento dell'integrazione di diversi tipi spaziali di costruzione di biblioteca nella storia nel contesto contemporaneo.
