Impacts of modularization in large industrial projects : a review and theory-based research agenda

Modularization is an old approach and a lot of research is done on different impacts that can be achieved by it but there are still some limitations in the current research that need to be discussed. This thesis presents a systematic literature review on modularization and its various impacts that provides a broad picture of the current research areas and presents the open areas in the field. The result of the literature review contains 29 research articles from journals that are most relevant and provide the base to the research study. The first step of this study is to identify the past trend of research on the basis of literature and what are the potential open issues or limitations of past researches. The second step is to form a framework to fulfill the gaps by providing research areas that are presented in the shape of a research agenda to give a direction to develop future research work in the field of modularization. The main open areas identified in the work are impacts of modularization on environment and impacts related to geographical location and transportation. The study is useful for the researchers to focus their research on some of open areas to fulfill the knowledge gaps in field of modularization.

La modularizzazione è un vecchio approccio e molte ricerche sono condotte su diversi impatti che possono essere raggiunti da esso, ma ci sono ancora alcuni limiti nella ricerca attuale che devono essere discussi. Questa tesi presenta una revisione sistematica della letteratura sulla modularizzazione e i suoi vari impatti che fornisce un quadro generale delle attuali aree di ricerca e presenta le aree aperte sul campo. Il risultato della revisione della letteratura contiene 29 articoli di ricerca da riviste che sono più rilevanti e forniscono la base per lo studio di ricerca. Il primo passo di questo studio è identificare la tendenza passata della ricerca sulla base della letteratura e quali sono i potenziali problemi aperti o limiti delle ricerche passate. Il secondo passo è quello di formare una struttura per soddisfare le lacune fornendo aree di ricerca che sono presentate sotto forma di un'agenda di ricerca per dare una direzione per lo sviluppo di futuri lavori di ricerca nel campo della modularizzazione. Le principali aree aperte identificate nel lavoro sono gli impatti della modularizzazione sull'ambiente e gli impatti legati all'ubicazione geografica e ai trasporti. Lo studio è utile per i ricercatori per concentrare la loro ricerca su alcune aree aperte per soddisfare le lacune di conoscenza nel campo della modularizzazione.
