For many years inductive loops have been the main source for traffic data, since they are well known and reliable instruments. Nowadays, with the growth of the number of GPS equipped vehicles, a new source of traffic data is emerging, generating the so-called “floating car data”. These data could be an efficient alternative to inductive loops, thanks also to the fact that they are significantly cheaper than traditional stationary methods. On the other hand, dynamic systems, such as floating cars, only capture a small number of vehicles, compared to the total traffic flow. In this thesis speed data measured by inductive loops and floating cars data in the A2 highway in Switzerland have been compared by means of a quality analysis, in order to identify the potential of TomTom traffic data.

Abstract
For many years inductive loops have been the main source for traffic data, since they are well known and reliable instruments. Nowadays, with the growth of the number of GPS equipped vehicles, a new source of traffic data is emerging, generating the so-called “floating car data”. These data could be an efficient alternative to inductive loops, thanks also to the fact that they are significantly cheaper than traditional stationary methods. On the other hand, dynamic systems, such as floating cars, only capture a small number of vehicles, compared to the total traffic flow. In this thesis speed data measured by inductive loops and floating cars data in the A2 highway in Switzerland have been compared by means of a quality analysis, in order to identify the potential of TomTom traffic data.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
