The Internet of Things has become a pervasive technological paradigm with several and wide application fields such as the Smart City, the Smart Building, the Smart Home, the Smart Factory and others. Among others, the Smart Home market is growing at an extremely fast pace and, in the recent years, has become a hot topic, both from a commercial point of view and from an academic point of view. This research fits into this context. Since the topic is considerably broad and full of interesting aspects, the thesis starts from a review of the most interesting academic papers concerning the Smart Home, trying to spot eventual gaps that scholars did not investigated so far, as a starting point to develop the work. The literature review provided as outputs two relevant gaps: on the one hand, a clear user-centric vision of the Smart Home is currently missing from a field being overwhelmingly ‘‘pushed’’ by technology developers; on the other hand, scholars have affirmed that research on business model innovation under networking in the Smart Home context is very scarce. The research work aims at addressing the research questions arisen from the literature gaps first of all with a careful analysis of the offering side and the demand side of the Smart Home market. Subsequently, a catalogue of innovative and inspirational use cases in the Smart Home context have been provided. These three blocks have been a guide to structure the final model, articulated in four areas of business: Insurance & Safety, Security, Energy and Assisted Living. For each area, an as-is solutions description and some future suggestions are presented, in order to draw the conclusions about possible innovative business models in such a context. The added value of the present thesis lies in its double purpose: first of all, the model provides a guide to practitioners and companies that struggle to explore and enter the Smart Home market; secondly, it enlarges the academic knowledge on several aspects that are so far neglected, such as the customer side and the demand side, deepening the concept of ecosystem between actors to fulfil the customer needs, not only demonstrating that it is a possible strategy, but also providing tangible examples and insights about the co-opetition between parties. The thesis with its practical and theoretical purpose attempts to be a unique contribution in the Smart Home context.

Abstract
The thesis with its practical and theoretical purpose attempts to be a unique contribution in the Smart Home context.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
