The objective of this thesis work was the analysis of the investments that the financial Incumbents make towards FinTech startups. It was necessary to create a database contained all the innovative companies in the high-tech financial sector born in the last 5 years and with at least a total funding of more than one million US dollars. The final census consists of 1210 startups analyzed individually in detail. There are three main sections that make up the census: the first is related to the startup business model, describing both the financial service offered and the technologies exploited; the second one relates to the founding that the startups received, considering the round, the type of investment (Equity or Debt), the amount collected and who the investors are; finally, the last section describes the scholastic and working background of the founders. The questions to which this study responds are multiple. Firstly, to find out if there are some successful features of the fintech startups that are most appreciated by banks and insurance companies. Subsequently, analyzing the role of financial incumbents within the lifecycle of these innovative companies. And finally, studying in detail the working background of the founders to understand if banks and insurance companies tend to finance experts in this sector.
L’obiettivo di questo lavoro di tesi è stato l’analisi degli investimenti che gli Incumbent finanziari effettuano nei confronti delle startup FinTech. È stato necessaria la creazione di un database che contenesse tutte le imprese innovative nel settore finanziario ad alto tasso tecnologico nate negli ultimi 5 anni e con almeno un finanziamento totale maggiore di un milione di $US. Il censimento finale è composto da 1210 startup analizzate singolarmente nei minimi dettagli. Sono tre le sezioni principali che compongono il censimento: la prima è relativa al business model della startup, descrivendo sial il servizio finanziario offerto che le tecnoliogie sfuttate; la seconda è relativa ai finanziamenti che le startup hanno ricevuto, andando a considerare il round, la tipologia di investimento (Equity o Debt), la somma raccolta e chi sono gli investitori; infine, l’ultima sezione descrive il background scolastico e lavorativo dei fondatori. Le domande principali a cui questo studio risponde sono molteplici. In primo luogo, si cerca di scoprire se ci sono delle caratteristiche di successo delle startup fintech che sono maggiormente apprezzate da banche e assicurazioni. Successivamente, si analizza il ruolo degli incumbent finanziari all’interno del lifecycle di queste imprese innovative. Ed infine si studia nel dettaglio il background lavorativo dei fondatori per capire se banche ed assicurazioni tendo a finanziare persone esperte di questo stesso settore.
