Cisternae. Uno spazio museale per le Terme di Caracalla

"Everything is now reduced to a bare skeleton with some parts knocked down on the ground, with others destroyed; but even so mutilating, in this desolate part of the eternal city, where the crowds once thickened and luxury was pompously pumping itself, the brown walls, which still seem to rise almost a difficult challenge in the sweet melancholy of the solitary plague, tell, to the visitor who knows how to question, the glory of the city that lived and will live through the centuries ". Pericle Ducati, (Sixth period, second phase, pp. 802-803) These words by Pericle Ducati, Italian archaeologist and etruscologist, suggest a vision, of history and of archaeological finds, which we have tried to follow and respect in the design of the site. Remains quite imprinted the dichotomy between the negation "but" and the adjective "mutile" that suggests how the place itself accepts and appreciates this fracture, rude but beautiful. The intervention, therefore, is grafted on an artery of the Baths almost completely destroyed and goes to work on the reconstruction of the southern front, where once were the tanks and libraries. The reconstruction of a portion of the tanks, in which a museum layout is planned, part of the Southeast Library and part of the Stadium serves this purpose. So, in the commitment described above, the project focuses on the reconstruction of what unfortunately is no longer there, to give the visitor a more complete image of the original plant. At the same time, the awareness of the location of the intervention today, has led the intervention also in a second direction, aimed at offering the visitor new structures, created through parallelepipeds suspended from the ceiling. These, treated with a white plaster, break with the brick, used instead for the reconstruction of the septa, and underline the diversity not only architectural but also conceptual. However, this immaculate architecture does not emerge and does not take its place in the urban landscape of the Baths, but remains hidden, below the quota of the reconstructed septa, ready to amaze visitors entering the museum.

“Tutto è ora ridotto ad un nudo scheletro con alcune parti abbattute al suolo, con altre distrutte; ma pur così mutile, in questa desolata parte della città eterna, ove un tempo si addensava la folla ed il lusso faceva fastosa pompa di sé, le brune muraglie, che ancora sembrano innalzarsi quasi ad ardua sfida nella dolce melanconia della plaga solitaria, dicono al visitatore che sappia interrogarle la gloria della città che visse e vivrà nei secoli”. Pericle Ducati, (Periodo sesto, fase seconda, pp. 802-803) Queste parole di Pericle Ducati, archeologo ed etruscologo italiano, lasciano intendere una visione, della storia e dei reperti archeologici, che si è cercato di seguire e rispettare nella progettazione all’interno del sito. Rimane impressa una dicotomia tra la negazione “ma” e l’aggettivo “mutile” che lascia intendere come il luogo stesso accetti e ne apprezzi questa frattura, rude ma bellissima. L’intervento, dunque, si innesta su un’arteria delle Terme quasi completamente distrutto e va a lavorare sulla ricostruzione del fronte sud, dove un tempo si trovavano le Cisterne e le Biblioteche. La ricostruzione di una porzione di Cisterne, nel quale viene previsto un allestimento museale, parte della Biblioteca a sud- est e di parte dello Stadio serve a questo scopo. Ecco che dunque, nell’impegno sopra descritto, il progetto verte sulla ricostruzione di ciò che purtroppo non vi è più, per restituire al visitatore un’immagine più completa dell’impianto originario. Allo stesso tempo, la presa di coscienza della collocazione dell’intervento ai giorni d’oggi, ha portato l’intervento anche in una seconda direzione, volta ad offrire al visitatore strutture inedite, realizzate tramite parallelepipedi sospesi dal soffitto. Questi, trattati con un intonaco bianco, entrano in rottura con il mattone invece usato per la ricostruzione dei setti e ne sottolineano la diversità non solo architettonica ma anche concettuale. Tuttavia, questa architettura immacolata non emerge e non prende posizione nel paesaggio urbano delle Terme, ma rimane nascosta, al di sotto della quota dei setti ricostruiti, pronta a stupire i visitatori che entrano nel museo.
