Ma.Ci.No. Una fabbrica di idee per la città di Novara

The goal of the thesis is to consider some approaches to a relationship between contemporary and historical architecture: the knowledge of existing buildings and the following planning implications are therefore highly considered. The thesis focuses on a former public slaughterhouse in Novara: the first section reconstructs the history of the area and carries out some preliminary research about urban and typology issues, in order to create a correct first approach to the existing zone. Every building has been analysed through several survey operations (measurement, photografic survey, structural analysis and others more). After this first part, it was possible to select a main theme for the project and all the uses related to it: this choice was made by keeping in mind the original features of the area and its buildings; the main target was to improve the conditions of the former slaughterhouse and to add value to its surroundings. Coliving was thought to be the most appropriate purpose and the main theme for the area: it is composed of different uses, housed in new and existing buildings, such as housing, coworking spaces and conference rooms. The project was therefore developed by considering the appearance and structural issues of new buildings, a new life for historical ones and the design of open spaces and green areas. Eventually, the former slaughterhouse was divided in four parts: each of them houses a group of uses. All of them are combined in a complex organism, giving the “Macello Civico” a new role in the city of Novara.

La presente tesi riflette sulle possibilità di dialogo tra architettura contemporanea ed architettura storica, ponendo in rilievo la necessità di un processo conoscitivo delle costruzioni esistenti ed i risvolti progettuali che ne conseguono. Oggetto della tesi è il complesso dell'ex-Macello Civico di Novara: nella prima sezione della tesi si è intrapreso il cammino di conoscenza dell'esistente, così da ottenere una base su cui stabilire i vincoli ed i gradi di libertà a cui il progetto deve essere sottoposto. Tale cammino si basa sia su ricerche preliminari di ambiti urbano e tipologico che sulle operazioni di rilievo del complesso (geometrico, fotografico, strutturale, materico-patologico e impiantistico), che hanno permesso la redazione di schedature per i singoli edifici. Si sono successivamente individuate le vocazioni del complesso e dei fabbricati, consentendo di rilevare gli interventi possibili nell'ex-Macello Civico ed il tema progettuale che meglio potesse rispondere a bisogni dell'area e della città. Si è dunque stabilito di inserire funzioni che valorizzassero il lotto, inserite in costruzioni sia nuove che esistenti: come destinazione più adatta si è identificato il coliving. Dopo uno studio di altri casi già disponibili, ci si è interrogati sulla declinazione di tale tema all'interno del progetto: l'adattamento delle preesistenze, gli aspetti materici, strutturali e tecnologici dei nuovi edifici, la gestione degli spazi aperti e verdi. In ottica progettuale l'area è stata infine divisa in più macro-sezioni funzionali, inerenti il tema di progetto e tra loro complementari, conferendo all'ex-Macello Civico un nuovo ruolo all'interno della città di Novara.
