Villa Adriana e la riqualificazione della buffer zone Unesco. Call internazionale di progettazione per la grande Villa Adriana. Designing the Unesco buffer zone

The object of this thesis is the reorganization and enlargement of the museum structure now present in Villa Adriana, inside the Antiquarium of Canopo, in order to exhibit properly the great cultural and artistic heritage representative of the Villa. Specifically, the new exhibition space will contain part of the Casino of Conte Fede, which is the substructure located west of the Canopo, to which will be fl anked two project buildings: the fi rst one recovers the ruins space near the Casino, the second one completes and closes the exhibition structure with a panoramic terrace facing the Canopo. The concept that origins the project is born from the recover of the ruins surveyed near the Canopo, it consists in the realization of architectural volumes that visually complete the original structure of the building. Moreover, the project reminds of the structural mesh of the existing volume in order to give to the new project an evocative role of the original architecture to which is related. The new building is enriched by a portico structure that represents the external exhibition path. The museum is organized in three parts: the fi rst volume, which corresponds to the existing Casino; the second volume, which enriches the museum path now present in Villa Adriana; the third volume, which concludes the exhibition path and will host a small refreshment area at the ground floor. The access to the museum system occurs from three distinctive points that correspond to three main buildings that compose the project: the first entrance is from the Casino, it takes advantage of the existing distribution of the museum; the second access is located at the beginning of the second building, accessible from a staircase connected to the Antiquarium terrace; the last entrance is located in the third building, corresponding to a panoramic terrace. The terrace offers to the visitors two options: the possibility to access every fl oor of the complex with a system of stairs and lifts, or to reach the roof using the external stair which is located between the new building and the archaeological existing wall. The museum will host the collection of statues and iconography of the Villa, now part of it is exhibited in the Antiquarium and part in deposits waiting for another proper location. The collection will become the protagonist of the project because its main purpose is to realize exhibitive spaces that are able to enhance the great quantity of art works belonged to the Villa. The interior and exterior spaces will host statues and reconstructive models of the Villa and its parts (included the famous model of Villa Adriana realized by Italo Gismondi) and the mosaics recovered during the archaeological excavation.The art works have a huge artistic value and some of them are well preserved, others, unfortunately, are damaged beyond recover. The project of this thesis wants to bring to life the great cultural heritage that belongs to the Villa, giving the possibility to observe it in a main location that is the place where it was found and recovered.

Oggetto di questo progetto di tesi è la riorganizzazione e ampliamento della struttura museale attualmente presente in Villa Adriana, all’interno dell’Antiquarium del Canopo, per poter così esibire in modo adeguato il notevole patrimonio artistico e rappresentativo della Villa. Nello specifico il nuovo spazio espositivo comprenderà la parte del Casino del Conte Fede, ovvero le sostruzioni ad ovest del Canopo, alla quale verranno affiancati due edifici di nuova costruzione: il primo che recupera il sedime delle rovine adiacenti al Casino, il secondo che invece completa e chiude la struttura espositiva con una terrazza panoramica rivolta verso il Canopo. La logica progettuale che ha dato origine a questo progetto nasce appunto dal recupero del sedime delle rovine rilevate vicino al casino, realizzando dei volumi che andassero a completare visivamente la struttura originale di questo edificio. Viene inoltre ripresa la maglia strutturale del corpo esistente, per dare una scansione al nuovo progetto che sia evocativa dell’architettura con la quale si rapporta. Il nuovo edificio viene arricchito da un porticato che fungerà da percorso espositivo esterno. Il museo è organizzato in tre parti: il primo corpo che corrisponde al Casino esistente, il secondo edificio che arricchisce il percorso museale attualmente presente nella Villa, e l’edificio terminale che conclude il percorso espositivo, il quale ospiterà anche un piccolo spazio ristoro al piano terra. L’accesso al sistema museale può avvenire in tre punti distinti del progetto, che corrispondo ai tre corpi di fabbrica che lo compongono: un primo ingresso avviene nel Casino, sfruttando la distribuzione attuale del museo; il secondo ingresso viene collocato all’inizio del secondo corpo del progetto, accessibile tramite una scalinata che comunica direttamente con la terrazza dell’Antiquarium; l’ultimo ingresso è posizionato nel terzo edificio, in corrispondenza della terrazza panoramica e offre due opzioni ai visitatori: la possibilità di accedere a ogni piano dell’edificio attraverso un sistema di scale interne e ascensori, oppure raggiungere direttamente la quota superiore del progetto utilizzando una scala esterna che si innesta tra l’edificio di nuova costruzione e il muro archeologico presente. Il museo è destinato ad ospitare la collezione statuaria ed iconografica della Villa, ora esposta in parte all’Antiquarium, in parte accumulata nei depositi in attesa di una sistemazione adeguata, e in parte collocata in altri musei. Essa diventa la protagonista del progetto, poiché lo scopo principale è appunto quello di realizzare degli spazi espositivi in grado di valorizzare al massimo la grande quantità di opere d’arte appartenenti alla Villa. Gli ambienti interni ed esterni ospiteranno quindi opere di statuaria, modelli ricostruttivi della Villa o delle sue parti (tra cui il celebre plastico di Villa Adriana realizzato da Italo Gismondi) e i mosaici recuperati durante gli scavi archeologici effettuati nei secoli. Le opere esposte sono tutte di grandissimo valore artistico e alcune di esse fortunatamente si sono discretamente conservate, altre invece hanno subito danni irreparabili. Con questo progetto si vuole quindi ridare vita all’immenso patrimonio appartenente alla Villa ad oggi rinvenuto, dando la possibilità ai visitatori di poterlo osservare in un solo luogo, cioè quello in cui è stato realizzato e ritrovato.
