Una nuova sede per la Cooper Union

The project of the new headquarters for Cooper Union’s Architecture, Engeneering and Fine Arts University was born after some meetings with Guido Zuliani, teacher of Architectural History and Modern architectural Concept of Cooper Union University. The demolition of a building at the intersection between the Seventh Street and the Second Avenue seemed to be a good opportunity to solve the strong need of the university campus to extend the spaces dedicated to students with a new academic building. The demolished building let free a plot, that is far less than a block from Cooper’s campus. This is the perfect location for a new academic building. The aim of this thesis is to design an academic building which can be integrated with the preexistent campus giving the students a new space that lives up to this important American University. According to this, in order to define the project it was fundamental to decide the quality of spaces and also evaluate the urban impact on the main background of the campus itself. The specificity of the lot, placed in a corner, also contributed to define another characteristic of this project.

L’intenzione di progettare una nuova sede per l’università di architettura, ingegneria e belle arti Cooper Union, è stata maturata in seguito a una serie di incontri tenuti da Guido Zuliani, professore strutturato di Architectural History e Modern Architectural Concept presso l’università Cooper Union. A fronte di una forte necessità da parte del campus universitario di ampliare gli spazi dedicati agli studenti, l’occasione per pensare a un progetto è stata data dalla demolizione di un edificio sito all’incrocio tra la settima Street e la seconda Avenue. L’edificio demolito ha lasciato libero un lotto distante meno di un isolato dal campus della Cooper. L’intento principale di questa tesi è quello di progettare un edificio universitario che possa integrarsi con il campus esistente, fornendo agli studenti un nuovo spazio all’altezza di questa importante università americana. Per questo, fondamentale per la definizione del progetto, non solo è la qualità intrinseca che si vuole dare agli spazi presenti nel nuovo edificio ma anche la valenza urbanistica che questo vuole ricoprire come componente attiva del campus. La particolarità del lotto, posto in angolo, ha inoltre definito un ulteriore spunto progettuale interessante.
