The aim of the project is to produce spatial solution for the site of a former metal industry factory located in the neighborhood of Donji (Lower) Dorcol, on the border between industrial and urban area in Belgrade. Donji Dorcol, one of the oldest Belgrade neighborhoods, was the first industrial area in Belgrade, filled with factories formed between Wars, following communist era buildings, located along the right coast of Danube river. Preserved industrial buildings give a historical and cultural value to the area and represent a valuable architectural resource. With existing initiatives and enthusiasm from the locals it has a potential of becoming a new creative district. Throughout the time, an important strategic plan for Belgrade has been orienting the city towards the Danube river, which involves concentrating new touristic, recreational and commercial functions in the area of Donji Dorcol in the near future. Proposed location is a triangular block surrounded with two streets and a railroad on one side. One of the streets represents the main direction leading from the city center towards the port and the river. The building is positioned parallel to this street, with a setback expanding the path towards the river while creating an interesting public space for the passersby. Building is accessible from two levels, with the sunken access in the back serving as an amphitheater for external events. Back plaza is a large triangular public space differentiated from the front plaza by introducing different landscape elements, such as hills and creating a more intimate environment. The building will serve as a cultural hub, containing public library, auditorium, co-sharing workspace, spaces for hosting educational events, workshops, lectures, exhibitions etc. Building volume with its simple cubic form, metal mesh facade, and saw tooth roof stands as a tribute to the industrial heritage of the area and resembles the warehouse halls and factories of the surrounding. Metal mesh, an industrial artefact, is added as an exterior layer of the glass facade, unifying the volume with a textured facade and providing alluring shadows throughout the interior. Upper floors are cantilevered above the glazed ground floor, creating a detachment of the building from the ground. Outdoor plaza pavement extends as the treatment of the ground floor of the building, connecting the interior with the surrounding public space. Simple volumetric appearance of the building is in contrast with the spatial and programmatic complexity of the interior space. The interior is organized around the set of flying volumes and planes, detached from the facade, arranged in a way to encourage the movement of the people in various directions and providing layered broad views across the space. Volumes can serve multiple functions and can be adapted according to the needs of the program. The proposing project is conceived as a creative harbor that serves as the pioneer of the transformation of the neglected industrial zone into a new urban center.
