Temenos. Paesaggi, suoli, materie per il già approdo di Rada San Francesco, Messina

“Between Scilla and Messina [...] where history is almost destroyed [and] poetry remains”. In this way Giovanni Pascoli describes an immemorial place already narrated by Strabo. Lost Zancle, commuted in today's Messina, even the Strait fell under the spell of denying the toponym "cagna" of Calabria. The towpaths of the nymph that Circe turned into a monster, the naiad that Zeus hurled into the sea and forced to stay in the flow of water, are today the landings of the "Charon" mechanism, alternating with the fleeting appearance of "Fata Morgana". Daily measures of the elsewhere, inextricably contended between the archaic Iblean landscape and the antiquity of the "most beautiful kilometer of Italy". The project wonders the passage of Rada San Francesco in its destiny of "seafront" no longer suited to ferrying, but in the hope of a geographic as well functional redevelopment: the infrastructural presences serving the stopover logistics and, for convex, the absence of infrastructure ables to regiment the water-all, therefore the washouts of first-rain or the creek, next to a never completed network capable of conducting sewage, lie to a dispositive figure legitimated in the footsteps of memory. Traces of a transport greed are tamed with the design of the ground, shaped for a tèmenos consecrated to the Mediterranean, its colors, its lands. Rada San Francesco is metric for minimal landscapes designed to harbor terraqueous substances; oh, materials: “from whom these miracles did spring, inspire my numbers with celestial I my long, laborious work complete.” (Ovid, Metamorphosis, L. I, verses 2-4).

“Tra Scilla e Messina […] dove è quasi distrutta la storia [e] resta la poesia”. Così Giovanni Pascoli per un luogo immemore già narrato da Strabone. Persa Zancle, tramutata nell’odierna Messina, anche lo Stretto cade vittima di sortilegio negando il toponimo alla “cagna” di Calabria. Gli arenili della ninfa che Circe rese mostro, della naiade che Zeus scagliò in mare costretta nel refluire delle acque, sono oggi gli approdi del meccanismo di “Caronte”, alterno per moto alla fuggevole apparizione di “Fata Morgana”. Misure per un quotidiano dell’altrove, indissolubilmente conteso tra l’arcaico del paesaggio ibleo e l’antichità del “più bel chilometro d’Italia”. Il progetto interroga l’andito di Rada San Francesco nella propria sorte di “fronte-a-mare” non più vocata al traghettamento, bensì all’auspicio di una riqualificazione geografica ancorché funzionale: le presenze infrastrutturali asservite alla logistica di scalo e, per convesso, l’assenza di infrastruttura capace di regimentare le acque-tutte, dunque i dilavamenti di prima-pioggia o di fiumara, accanto ad una mai compiuta rete per il convogliamento delle acque nere, soggiacciono ad una figura dispositiva legittimata nelle orme della memoria. Tracce di una bramosia trasportistica che si vogliono ammansite col disegno di suolo, modellato per un tèmenos consacrato al Meditteraneo, ai suoi colori, alle sue terre. Rada San Francesco è metrica per paesaggi minimi ad albergare sostanze terracquee; oh, materie: “se vostre sono queste metamorfosi, ispirate il mio disegno così che il canto dalle origini del mondo si snodi ininterrotto sino ai miei giorni.” (Ovidio, Metamorfosi, L.
