Abstract
In recent years, Italy has experienced a progressive decline of the ratio between the health expenditure and the Gross Domestic Product, approaching the minimum threshold that guarantees access to treatment indicated by the World Health Organization (6.5%). This led to the reduction of the quality of assistance of the National Health Service and forced citizens to tap into their pockets to access treatments or, in the worst case, to renounce them. In 2017, 7% of the Italian population (3,6 million people) did not receive the proper care due to economic reasons. In this light, digital technologies represent a huge opportunity for several actors to increase the quality of assistance and to reduce costs. Thus, it is interesting to analyze how innovative technologies can be exploited to deliver innovative solutions. We are entering the Internet of Things era (IoT), characterized by the presence of many connected objects, which continuously generate data. The IoT is reshaping several businesses, including the healthcare sector, leading to the Smart Health. The constant elaboration of the information allows to introduce innovative health services, tailored on individual needs. The potential of data is nevertheless still ambiguous and generally the benefits are not clear enough to justify the investments. This dissertation provides a model to delineate the possible business directions, suggesting strategic approaches based on data exploitation. Moreover, a real case of an IoT solution has been studied to provide evidence of the Smart Health benefits. This model can be taken for reference for several healthcare players. Health caregivers, such as hospitals, pharmacies, insurance companies or social cooperatives, can refer to this framework to determine the proper approach to develop data enhanced strategies and to verify the potential benefits.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
