This research was proposed with the support of Alzarating, a consultant company with an outstanding experience in the SMEs sector, looking for developing a methodology that will facilitate the preparation and elaboration of a proper assessment detecting and showing to the SMEs the opportunities for improvement through Lean Thinking, and helping to translate all the theory concepts, into a more practical and applicable approach. This thesis was based on the design of an assessment tool which is able to provide to the Alzarating's consultants a way to identify the actual performance of companies process, the critical points and assign a "rating" which evaluate company's results in a Lean thinking perspective. It is important to highlight that the innovative characteristic of this approach is the fact that this assessment not only contemplates the traditional Lean applied in Manufacturing, but it also considers the applicability of Lean in other important areas as Supply Chain,Sales & Management, Product Development, defined initially as the most important areas into a company. The tool is based on the definition of several Balance Scorecards, constituted by set of indicators which were determined taking into account all the documents, researches and literature studied during the first part of the analysis. Through the use of the Analytical Hierarchical Process, it was possible to define a structure in order to prioritize all the indicators and in turn obtaining the final "rating". Finally , once the tool was completed, it was tested and applied into two SMEs and after the results analysis, it was possible to identify clear critical areas and opportunities for improvement. Since this topic is just the beginning of something which could be bigger, possible and further improvements were suggested.
