The importance of research-industry collaboration has always been at the heart of economists, policy makers and management scholars alike. Despite the large literature on the topic, few studies shed light on the collaboration with Big Science Centers. We addressed this gap specifically by focusing on a collaboration between a firm and a Big Science Center specialized in Artificial Intelligence. To do so we based on the single case study methodology. The study provides contributions to both theory and practice. First, it advances extant knowledge over the relationship between firms and BSCs. In particular, it provides a detailed investigation over “what and how” a collaboration among these entities may foster firm’s innovation, by also leveraging on a BM perspective. Second, we argue that a business model innovation triggered by a collaboration with a BSC may lead to an open business model, as suitable configuration for a firm in need to foster innovation. Third, consistently with Foss and Saebi, (2018), our study provides detailed empirical evidences over the mutual connection and complementarities among value mechanisms of BM, confirming once again an architectural view of firms’ Business Model (Teece, 2007, 2010, 2018). In addition, our findings show how firms' manager and BSCs may organize and structure their collaboration to foster innovation. The study is not free of limitations, mainly coming from the qualitative nature of the case study. Future research should try to analyze the topic leveraging on a larger sample and quantitative methodologies to allow the generalizability of the results. Finally, the study provides practical implications for managers and entrepreneurs involved in this process of exchange of knowledge.

Abstract
Finally, the study provides practical implications for managers and entrepreneurs involved in this process of exchange of knowledge.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
