The alchemical path in the Ducal Palace. From chaos to ether

The Master’s degree thesis develops a design hypothesis for a new design within the complex of the Ducal Palace in Mantua. The work comes from the project carried out during the Antico and Nuovo Final Workshop, developing a different project in response to the issues addressed. The site of the project is the Giardino dei Semplici, which has origins in the early sixteenth century. The main theme of the project is Alchemy, a subject as fascinating as it is mystical, which has always been present in the Renaissance period and obviously within the architectural complex. Following the concept studied in the workshop we have set up a “Alchemical Path”, which through specific interventions tries to recreate the alchemical process, starting from the “Chaos of matter”, until reaching the "Ether". The Path has the function of creating links within the Palace through precise interventions that connect the Giardino dei Semplici, the Corridore, the Rustica and the rooms of the Metamorphosis. The architectural translation tries to use various symbologies in respect of the relationship between a new and an ancient architecture: a problem that requires a complex research and that today present different positions of thought. Therefore, in the Path we will be able to read symbolic values ​​linked to Alchemy in the various elements. Our design hypothesis is based on ideas of interventions that respect the historical architectural heritage, trying to extract its full potential.

La tesi di Laurea Magistrale sviluppa un’ipotesi progettuale per un nuovo design all’interno del complesso del Palazzo Ducale di Mantova. Il lavoro nasce dal progetto svolto durante il Workshop Finale Antico e Nuovo, sviluppando un progetto diverso in risposta alle tematiche affrontate. Il sito del progetto è il Giardino dei Semplici, il quale ha origini negli inizi del XVI secolo. La tematica principale del progetto è l’Alchimia, materia tanto affascinante quanto mistica, che è sempre stata presente nell’epoca rinascimentale e ovviamente all’interno del complesso architettonico. Seguendo il concept studiato all’interno del workshop abbiamo allestito un “Percorso dell’Alchimia”, che tramite interventi puntuali cerca di ricreare il processo alchemico, partendo dal “Caos della materia”, fino a raggiungere l’”Etere”. Il Percorso ha la funzione di creare collegamenti all’interno del Palazzo mediante precisi interventi che collegano tra di loro il Giardino dei Semplici, il Corridore, la Rustica e le stanze della Metamorfosi. La traduzione architettonica cerca di utilizzare varie simbologie nel rispetto del rapporto tra una nuova e un’antica architettura: un problema che richiede una complessa ricerca e che al giorno d’oggi presente differenti posizioni di pensiero. Dunque, nel Percorso potremo leggere nei vari elementi valori simbolici legati all’Alchimia. La nostra ipotesi progettuale si basa su idee di interventi che rispettano il patrimonio storico architettonico, cercando di estrarre al massimo le sue potenzialità.
