Overiver market. A project of renewal and reuse of Verona's river customs

Searching for a the thesis theme we decided to choose a field with issues that are not far from our closest reality. So our thesis arises from the need to bring to the attention a part of the historical center of Verona now marginal and forgotten by people though the rehabilitation of a building which now is impossible to use. The ancient River Customs is a neglected space but still full of charm and potentialities. Its uniqueness is given by its thrilling contact with the river, infact it is the only building in Verona that with the big steps of its pier it is facing the river. This designing process aim to a urban renewal through the definition of a covered market space and wants to give to the city and its citizen an opportunity of cultural role, social gathering and an economic regeneration by providing the city a new cultural heritage. The covered market activity develops around three different moments: the sale, the consumption and the promotion of the food culture. The sale is planned to be inside the River Customs, which will be covered with a four-pitch steel roof. The consumption and the promotion or divulgation activities of the food culture will take place into the added building, that will be settled in the space now occupied by a parking lot right adjacent the ancient building.

Nello scegliere il tema della tesi abbiamo deciso di individuare un ambito che offrisse tematiche non lontane dalla nostra realtà. La nostra tesi nasce quindi dalla necessità di portare all’attenzione una parte del centro storico di Verona ormai marginale e dimenticata dalle persone attraverso la riqualificazione di un edificio ormai impossibile da utilizzare. L’antica Dogana di Fiume è un edificio trascurato, ma ancora pieno di fascino e potenzialità. La sua unicità è data dal suo emozionante contatto con il fiume: la Dogana è infatti l’unico edificio di Verona che con i grandi gradini del suo molo si affaccia sul fiume. Questo percorso progettuale ha come obiettivo un rinnovamento urbano attraverso la definizione di uno spazio di mercato coperto e vuole dare alla città e ai suoi cittadini opportunità concrete di protagonismo culturale, aggregazione sociale e rivitalizzazione economica diventando patrimonio culturale per la città. Il mercato coperto si sviluppa in tre tre diversi momenti: la vendita, il consumo e la promozione della cultura del cibo. La vendita è stata posizionata all’interno della dogana che viene dotata di una copertura a quattro falde in acciaio, mentre il consumo e la divulgazione sono stati collocati in un’estensione realizzata nel parcheggio antistante.
