The subject of the present work is the former Bishop’s Palace Palazzo Barbaro of the municipality of Monteforte d’Alpone, 25 kilometres east of Verona. The building is protected within the ambit of the Codice dei Beni Culturali e del Paesaggio (Cultural Heritage and Landscape Code, Legislative Decree 42/2004) and considered to be among the first examples of Renaissance architecture in the Verona area. In particular, the work examines the wooden ceiling of the Hall, which is located on the first floor of the Palace’ southern wing and represents a singular example of the massive restructuring project of the episcopal residences by the Bishop Ermolao Barbaro (1453-1471). The first phase of the research relies to bibliographic and archive material with the purpose of framing the history of the municipality of Monteforte d’Alpone and of retracing the origins and most important information of the Palace together with its subsequent transformations. In the second phase of the study, we provide a comprehensive, still as detailed as possible, description of the Palace. Eventually, we devoted a great deal of attention to the reporting of the survey activities of the episcopal rooms, among which are the Hall, the “Sala degli Affreschi”, the bedroom and the alcove with the closets. The proper analysis of the deck ceiling covers the third phase. Since the bibliographic and archive sources could not reveal sufficiently relevant elements for creating a description of the constructive system, it has been the careful observation of the wooden artefact (both of the intrados and of the extrados) and of the load-bearing structure that enabled us to draw the final hypothesis. In conclusion, the probable construction stages are presented by means of planimetric and sectional diagrams. They support the identification of eight phases through which we illustrate the pose sequence and the hypothetical dimensioning of the deck ceiling’ structural and finishes components. Images and three-dimensional projections, which are the results of our photographic surveying activities, accompany those diagrams.

Abstract
Images and three-dimensional projections, which are the results of our photographic surveying activities, accompany those diagrams.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
