The final goal of our study is to contribute to scientific research in the sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) field towards the creation of framework, based on dynamic capabilities’ theory, providing practical guidelines for the acquisition and development of strategic capabilities needed to obtain an integrated and coherent approach to sustainability along the whole luxury fashion supply chain. The longitudinal case study we ran is focused on the analysis of a famous group, operating in the luxury sector and well known for its sustainability efforts and sustainable development in its sector. From the identification and the following classification and analysis of the practices put in place by the group we identified four main themes around which group’s sustainable strategy have been development. These themes encompass the reduction of pollution and environmental impact along the supply chain; the constant commitment to disseminate sustainability culture both inside and outside the boundaries of the company; the growing integration and coordination with suppliers and the creation of traceability mechanisms, needed to obtain fully transparent supply chains. Seen the growing necessity to adopt a holistic and integrated approach towards sustainability, a set of practices and actions has been identified. Those actions are needed to grant a further integration and participation of partners to projects and initiatives aimed to eliminate environmental impact caused by manufacturing processes. Our research provides a deep analysis of the Italian tanning industry that, due to the high amount of chemicals used in raw hides treatment, constitutes itself as one of the most polluting industries. Our work highlights a set of leather specific sustainability practices, easily extendible to other sectors with the right generalizations.
