Looking back at the lake. Study around a museum of water for the city of Mantua, restoring the historical memory to the site

It is precisely around the relationship of reciprocity that exists between the place and the water that rotates our thesis, defining the first as the city of Mantua and the second as the lakes that surround it. The two have always been in constant change, symbiotically, with a fluctuating relationship between addiction and conflict. We started from the use of water as a food and defensive resource, perfecting the techniques of exploitation over the centuries, from the first circle to the medieval walls. We then moved on to a real rejection of the same, often linked to diseases of various kinds, to return to its function of defense, exaggerated concept with the Austrian fortifications. So we come to an almost total lack of interest, then led to the scourge of building abuisivism, up to the present day with the rediscovery of its importance and the progressive approach. In this regard, just look at the recent transformation of the lakefront, today a pleasant place to stop and pass. It is precisely the position taken by the city of wanting to approach the water that gave a further impetus to this project, the result of a study that oscillates between the concept of the traditional didactic museum and the sensory one, of more recent intuition. A museum itinerary for the city of Mantua that focuses on the theme of water would help the community to rediscover its own history, to trace a liaison between the present and the past, raising awareness on a question often set aside or underestimated. As proof of this there is the total absence of a collection of the history of the Lakes, the Rio or the Magistral Fossa, made available by the city, which can be enjoyed by everyone. The history of Mantua has been shaped by water, as has happened to many other large Italian cities, but the peculiarity that makes it singular compared to the others is the way in which the water embraces the city, without crossing it clearly, almost as if he wanted to stay on the sidelines.

È proprio attorno al rapporto di reciprocità che vi è tra il luogo e l’acqua che ruota la nostra tesi, definendo il primo come la città di Mantova e il secondo come i laghi che la circondano. I due sono sempre stati in costante mutamento, simbioticamente, con una rapporto altalenante tra la dipendenza e la conflittualità. Si è partiti dall’utilizzo dell’acqua come risorsa alimentare e difensiva, perfezionando nei secoli le tecniche di sfruttamento, dalla prima cerchia fino alla cinta muraria medioevale. Si è passati poi ad un vero e proprio rigetto della stessa, spesso collegata a malattie di vario genere, per ritornare alla sua funzione di difesa, concetto esasperato con le fortificazioni austriache. Si approda quindi ad un quasi totale disinteresse, sfociato poi nella piaga dell’abuisivismo edilizio, fino ad arrivare ai giorni nostri con la riscoperta della sua importanza e il progressivo avvicinamento. A tal proposito basti osservare la recente trasformazione del lungolago, ad oggi piacevole luogo di sosta e passaggi. È proprio la presa di posizione della città del volersi riavvicinare all’acqua che ha dato un ulteriore impulso a questo progetto, risultato di uno studio che oscilla tra il concetto del tradizionale museo didattico e quello sensoriale, di più recente intuizione. Un percorso museale per la città di Mantova che si impernia sul tema dell’acqua aiuterebbe la collettività a riscoprire la propria storia, a tracciare una liaison tra il presente e il passato, sensibilizzando su una questione spesso accantonata o sottovalutata. A riprova di ciò vi è la totale assenza di una raccolta della storia dei Laghi, del Rio o della Fossa Magistrale, messa a disposizione dalle città, che possa essere fruibile da tutti. La storia di Mantova è stata plasmata dall’acqua, come è successo a molte altre grandi città italiane, ma la peculiarità che la rende singolare rispetto alle altre è il modo in cui l’acqua abbraccia la città, senza attraversarla nettamente, quasi come se volesse rimanere in disparte.
